wow that was truly a good idea for a post. i live way off the beaten path, you cant even see my house from the road. totally by itself. i have a dog, but thats about it. the good part is, they have to go down that one lane driveway to get out as well., there is no other way.
the only thing worth taking at all would be my kids computer system, but she would truly be lost without it.
i never had keys for the doors, and never needed them, so far. time will tell if that is still true.
i have a funny story on this subject: see next reply
so, as a young person in my 20's , this country bumpkin lived in manhattan nyc. yeah, what a fit that was. anyway, i never locked a door at home, so i didnt lock the 5 (count um) 5 deadbolts that were on my apartment door. granted, i had a 150 lb. alaskan malamute in there, but still.
so one day it happened. the building got robbed. all but my apartment. when the police came to take my statement, they couldnt figure out why i wasnt robbed. (i think they thought i did it). when i told them, i never lock my door, they could not believe it. it was ajar when i came home, but i thought nothing of it. the cops think, the robbers opened my door, found it unlocked, and it spooked them, so they left my apartment alone.
go figure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Buster is the nise maker around here and he is very good at barking at unfamiliar folks that come to the door. We had our fron window smashed in by a local kid (the details are unbelieveable) about two years ago. My wife didn't feel so safe anymore so i installed a video monitor security system. It cost a little less then a desktop computer and can be connected to a VCR. With this set-up my wife can see who is coming up the street either way, who is in the yard and who is at the door. She cvan hear what they are saying and if she wants too, she can talk to them through a speaker. The cameras work in the dark, but are way better if a light comes on so we bought a motion sensing floodlight for about $40 bucks and installed it ourselves.
We have seen a lot of stuff on that system. People stealing from us and cops behaving badly. We played a tape for the local police chief of his officers making racist comments and we were told that it is a felony to audio record police.
I was very surprised by this.
Guns and scary looking dogs is how we do it in the south...lol I had motion sensing lights but wild critters kept setting them off and the dogs would bark all night. So I stopped using them. If someone really wants to break in, they can and will do it no matter what you try. I stopped worrying about it.
HG52, D22007 here. In the South, as already stated in another reply, we rely on big dogs & bigger guns! I have, standing in the foyer corner, my best BB-shot air-gun; suitable for scaring off randy squirrels and snake-oil salesmen. Never had to use it, but the knowledge of it being there empowers me in some visceral way; my secret weapon against the bogeyman, outside of the safety-net of my domicile. But seriously, living alone as I have done for so many years, has given me a sense of security that I can only attribute to the 'Power of Prayer'. I pray daily for my personal safety and that of my dwelling (household). And I'm blessed accordingly. "For You have given Your angels charge over me. They keep me in all my ways. In my pathway is life, healing and health. In Jesus' name, Amen." (Ps. 91:10,11; Prov. 12:28.) Respectfully yours, D22007.
We live at the corner of a relatively busy County Road, so we have installed an alarm system through our local electric cooperative at a very affordable rate.
We leave on vacations and there is an alarm if the heat goes off in the winter, and we shut off the water in case of a malfunction.
There are too many random robberies, and I like the peace of mind of having an indoor alarm as well as an exit alarm set up. We still have people coming into the yard and stealing things at night -- lost a gas tank from the boat one year, a tank of gas was siphoned this week.
We know it is the from neighborhood, but can't catch them.
I wouldn't be without it.
When I was in high school, the houses on either side of us were robbed during daylight hours. Most of the neighbors were at work or school. Our house was not robbed, but it may have been because of the German Shepherd who had the run of the fenced back yard and the house via doggie door. Later a couple of stay-at-home moms remembered hearing the dog barking more than usual, but didn't look to see what he was barking at. We probably would have been robbed too, if we hadn't had the dog. From then on, until the day we moved, no one was robbed and everyone paid more attention when he barked.
I read recently an article in which a former burglar had been interviewed said that dogs were the best alarm. Most burglars don't want to mess with a house with a dog (or dogs). But, contrary to popular opinion, he recommends small dogs, such as Chihuahua's, because they are barkers. He said that the big dogs usually don't bark. I think my German Shepherd would disagree with that :D I happen to have two Chihuahua's and believe me, they let me know when someone is outside.
about 2 months ago, there was a home invasion in my suburb, also my neighbors house was broken into and robbed
My protection is Buddy...husky-chow-pit bull-german shepherd, Benelli 20 gauge shotgun (at back door) and Stoeger (.40 cal semiautomatic hand gun) at front door
when I move to the north woods of WI, these will continue to be my home-defense program, perhaps augmented with motion triggered cameras
the area I am moving to has some meth heads and is a hot-bed of anti-tax people...I hope I never have to use either weapon, but will never hesitate to use them if my life is in danger

there is some truth to the , big dogs dont bark theory. my 150lb malamute didnt bark, ever. he growled, and when he did, you took notice. he would invite a burglar in for tea. catch was, he wouldnt let them out.
i had this "supposed realtor" come into my apartment years ago. he claimed the landlord sent him. which turned out not to be true. i kinda thought not, since he didnt knock, just came in, and was standing behind me in the kitchen. but he played at measuring when he saw the dog. i told him not to go into the dogs room, but he didnt listen. dog stood there and did that wolf growl, and he was stuck inside.
i went shopping for a few hours, he was still there when i got back. it was a good laugh. no one bothered us again in that place.
dogs rock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!
but i gotta say, a good shot gun is nice toooooo. my biggest problem is bears right now, and coons. people are nothing compared to them.
Bears and coons?
You Rock!
