Shelter for the toads...

I have to confess to having warm feelings about any creature that eats mosquitos and toads are high on my list of valued yard residents. Sometimes they make me jump when I happen upon them in the thick leaves and grasses...but I make them jump too. I read that a toad will consume three times his weight in garden insect pests each day and I vowed to make sure that they knew they were welcome in my yard. So...part of my yard project for this weekend has been to place two "Toad Houses" in the yard! I have a "City House" for the toads who live in the flowers and hostas...and a "Country House" for the toads who patrol my tomatoes and peppers and eggplants. Each house has a pool (saucer of water) so the little fellers don't get dried out. The houses are actually supposed to be helpful so that the toads have a place to hide from the direct sun and from predators.

How clever. I have dogs and cats so I don't want to put the toads in harms way. However I have my flower beds finced to keep my critters out. The toads hide in the flowes and their is always water around. I live in the country so there is ample places for them to hide.

I have lizards here, rather than toads. The dog likes to chase them. A road runner comes by from time to time to hunt. It hadn't occurred to me that I could or should provide shelter for them. Hmmm, let me think about that.

I had to laugh when I read this. I've never heard of a toad house. Do they really use them? My toads are just sort of on their own but I have a lot of foliage for them to hide in or under my decks. Dogs and cats usually won't mess with them because they release a liquid that tastes really bad if an animal tried to "mouth" them. I you pick one up in your hand, they'll release the liquid there too.
