Why Say Anything!!!

O.K. I was in Maine with my brother last week and his neighbor borrowed my brothers backhoe for the day. The next day he thanked my brother and invited the two of us on his boat on the lake. He said he would get out of work at 5:30 and he would come down and pick us up to take us to the lake. He never came, never called...here we are waiting and nothing. Now my question is "Why say anything at all if your not going to do it." I was very disappointed as my brother was too. My brother doesn't have a boat and has never been on the lake near his home. I just needed to get this off my chest....

If it were me I wouldn't say anything but it would be a cold day in Satan's realm before that neighbor would borrow a backhoe or anything else from me for quite awhile.

I thought it was just the people I knew that did stuff like that, but guess it's a widespread thing. Have had people before said they'll be here at a certain time, day, etc., (plumbing, repairs, etc. AND friends) they never show or if they do, it's the next day and then never mention why they are late...It's like it don't matter, makes you wonder does anyone keep their word anymore??

have ya tried calling and asking him? maybe he broke his leg and spent the entire night at the hospital (i know fictitious). but maybe. it cant hurt. this will also let them know, you are annoyed.

sometimes people are jerks, but sometimes, their really is a good reason. it is best you find out which this guy is, before you become friends.

I would probably call and ask what happened and include the information about how we were waiting and ready to go. He should get a hint that there will be no more borrowing, and there should be no more loaning. I learned a long time ago to let people know that I don't loan out my tools, and I learned that by having to pay for broken tools returned to me.

Boy, that brings up another whole topic there.....

I've had this happen alot. I interviewed a guy to work for me the other day and he took the job yet he didn't show up, didn't call, didn't answer when I called him. I can't tell you why he wouldn't be there after he said he would. It could be like hipp says or just another one of those little mysteries.

I was always taught that when I made a promise, I kept it. This guy never got that kind of instruction, it looks like. And the man who was gypped out of his boating jaunt should never, ever loan anything to this guy again because he will expect the loan of everything in return for nothing, not even a little boat ride on a lake, for pete's sake. What a jerk.

How about if your brother sends him a bill for backhoe rental?

Here would be something like I would do, get him on the phone then:

"Are you alright?", said in a slightly agitated tone.

If he responded that all was well, then, "Wow, that's a relief, when we waited and waited and didn't hear from you we got concerned that something might have happened. We couldn't imagine why you wouldn't have called us otherwise. We would have called sooner, but didn't want to seem like nosy parkers. Anyway, we're glad everything is okay. Oh, by the way is your address (whatever)? Oh good, then we got it right when we sent the backhoe bill."
