Hi

Sounds like everyone is busy. Grammiesue, your idea of putting projects in a notebook for the future is great. I have been listing them on a blackboard in my crafts room but I've run out of room.
Recently, I have been working on curtains for my windows. I have vertical blinds but a room doesn't seem finished to me without curtains. I finished the last one this week and am in the process of hanging them. Next week I will be hanging the canopy I made to go over my grandmother's bed.
I read your posting about crocheting the ragrugs and have a question. Do you attach a backing to the rug after you have finished it? Can you wash the rugs in the washer? I have a dog, lots of nieces and nephews and accidents sometimes happen.
My niece made a purse a couple of summers ago from the pockets on a pair of jeans. It was so cute that the other girls in the family had her make each of them one. I will ask her for the pattern and post it the next time I see her.
You asked about spinning. I don't do it, but a friend in Bisbee does, sometimes. It can be tedious. She finds a fiber, prepares it by cleaning it, combing it and dieing it. She then spins it one of two ways. The easiest, I think, is the drop spindle. Which you attach the fiber to and drop it. A thread is created. When you get enough to form a yarn you then can use it to knit, crochet or weave. The other technique is to use a spinning wheel. I have no idea as to how you do that. I have watched her, it looks relaxing, but too complex for me.
This looks like a fun group.

I love my note book because I know just where to go when I want to pursue a project or get an idea.
I think you will like it.

I was wondering about the Canopy that you made, what type of material did you use. I keep getting questions at work about the sheer material and the only thing I can think to say is that they need a really sharp needle. Did you use a sheer? And if you did do you have any tips for sewing with it?

As far as the rag rugs go I imagine you could put a backing on them and washing them would be up to your washer. If the rug is heavy I think I'd take it to the Laundry mat and put it in one of those heavy duty washers.

I love the purse idea and look forward to the post.

Oh yes and welcome to the group. There are some really nice people here.

For the canopy, I picked up some of the lace fabric when I was in Bisbee. It was white, I don't exactly know the fabric. Anyway, I used the tub of my washer to dye it with tea, so it looks aged. It was a dollar a yard at Wal-mart so I had fourteen yards. After dying it, rinsing a couple of times, and spinning it, I dried it. Then divided it into fourths, I matched the pattern, using a regular sewing machine needle, I sewed two pieces together for each side. Then I hemmed it at the bottom, made a pocket at both tops, and handstiched some three inch fringe to one side and around the bottom. I picked up a rod set that forms a half hoop which I am going to attach to the ceiling. I may or may not use something to make a crown for the canopy. It depends on how creative I feel when I finish a few other projects.

Thanks for the welcome. That is why I joined. I've noticed that people who craft are some of the nicest people in the world. Take care, Denise

I am new to EONS and am scouting around for a group to join. Is i okay if Ihang with you guys for a while while I figure it out?
I am a fabric artist-- right now I am hand painting silk scarves, but sometimes I branch out. As a matter of fact, I used to make rag rugs out of bleached muslin and them dye them. They were neat, but I never could get past the washign issue-- which you touched upon. After many washings, the cotton warp would start to deteriorate. And you HAVE to wash these things! I know that the Navajo women would brush their rugs with snow, but that doesnt apply here. I have looked everywhere for an alternative to cotton warp, and found nothing-- meanwhile, I lost interest in the rugs and now I am deep into the dye.
