iPod Touchdown

Okay, so now that the new iPhone is priced the same as the iPod Touch, and the Touch is bundled as a free (via rebate) bundle with a back-to-school Mac, does this mean there's a new iPod Touch (at a lower price?) lurking out there waiting for shelf space?

Here's one opinion on that:

The new price of the iPhone is due to AT&T subsidies not a re-pricing by Apple. It is a new and awkward situation for Apple. I have no idea how or if they will do anything about it. I suppose it will depend on whether or not iPod Touch sales drop.

For the past 2 years at least, Apple has had the Back to School iPod deal and each September, when the deal ends, there was a new iPod model that was introduced. So you can wait and see I guess.

Pressly, I'm an iPod freak. I've owned 6, gave awy 2 (Shuttle and Picture version) and actively use 4 now, each one with a distinct purpose. Gen 3 40GB to store all my tunes for sound system (adapter), a 2 GB Nano for car, a 4 GB Nano for exercise and the 8 GB Touch for general enjoyment.

Screw the iPhone, regardless of cost--I'm retired and don't need to be bothered by small talk--I refuse to be tethered to any form of cell phone except the one in the car for emergencies.

But the Touch, IMHO, is the ultimate--it just needs a bigger drive (30 would help). I must admit that I love it because it's sexy. I can't use all the goodies because of tremor condition--I have trouble with sensitivity of scrolling--my lightest touch makes a search move from "A" to "Z" when all I want is "B". No emails for me--can't use keyboard. But I can click to see a webpage and YouTube video.

If Steve calls me for a suggestion, I'll recommend some setting for sensitivity. Either way, I'm IN for the next Gen Touch, at ANY cost. One little problem is my wife who thinks I have enough iPod toys.

I need an excuse when THE DAY comes--what purpose can I rationalize for a 5th iPod?...LOL

They have also been giving them away like candy at trade shows. I went to Web 2.0 in San Francisco with a co-worker, and we both won iPod Touches. Then a couple of months later I went to EMC World in Las Vegas with 3 co-workers and 2 of us won iPod Touches. That's a lot of giveaways.

Do you need another co-worker to accompany you on some of these lucky occasions? :-D

Seriously, if you live in or near a big city, check for tech conferences. Most of them include a trade show component that they'll call an "expo" or a "solutions pavilion" or something like that. Conference attendance is often upwards of $1K but at most (even MacWorld) you can register for an expo pass for free (you may need a code, but if you're good with a search engine you can usually find one). The expo floor is full of vendor booths, and to entice you to listen to their sales pitches, most offer freebie swag and/or drawings for cool stuff. Like I said, at the couple of conferences/expos I went to this year vendors were giving away a lot of iPod Touches in their drawings, which makes me wonder whether they were getting an especially good deal on them from Apple. And if you don't get an iPod Touch, the tech-logo'd t-shirts, pens, and other swag are usually available to anyone who wants them. Check out my Bubble 2.0 blog for a list of some of the swag at Web 2.0. The other one was similar.
