computer microphone

I can't believe I can't figure this out but how do I know if my computer has an internal microphone? I have downloaded and am trying to set up Skype but I can't get any sound when I do the check. My speakers are working fine but when I try to record I get no sound back. The Premio speakers have a jack for headphones and that leads me to believe I need to buy a headset/microphone.

I have tried all the suggestions in the Skype set up --- making sure the microphone settings weren't at mute, etc. But I am coming to the conclusion I don't have a microphone. ugh!

I have a Premio Computer, Intel Pentium, 6 years old, XP Pro, SP2, 240Ghz, 512 Ram.

Should I just go out and buy a headset with microphone?

Take a look at your sound card and see if you can plug one in first. It is in the back of your computer. The holes for the jacks are color coded. There should be a red one and a green one. There may be others. But those are the two you are interested in. The microphone goes in the Red one and the speakers go in the Green one. Unless your owners manual specifies otherwise. In any case RTFM.

Yes, I do have on the front of my machine the red and green plugs for speakers and microphones and they are marked with a microphone and headset but that is not what I was asking. Yes, I have checked my manual and there is nothing in it. Just wanted to know if there was a way to see if my computer has an internal microphone but will go buy a headset and use it.

Thanks

To Love Guate , I have never seen a computer with an internal microphone. I am not saying they don't make one , but I have never seen one. You better get the headset or just a microphone to plug in.

get the headset, and sometimes Skype needs a bit of tweaking. without the headset, you will get echos when you talk and it will make you crazy. The headsets are really cheap.

My daughter has some 3 year old desktop with no mic or headset, and I can talk to her on it. So who knows? but she is not on skype. this is through Yahoo voice chat.

The only place you find an internal micropone is in a laptop. It will usually be on the monitor portion. Some monitors have internal microphones. The reasons are simple; because you may have your PC on the floor and it will not pick up the sound.

Most PC's now have the microphone ports, usually part of the sound card sometimes with the jacks on the front -usally the back.
