Please always remember this.

Don't lose sight of the fact that although there may be only ONE of you and you may have only had 2 parents and 4 grandparents, you had 8 great grandparents, 16 gg grandparents, 32 ggg grandparents, 64 gggg grandparents 128 ggggg grandparents etc.

Never ASSUME. Document everything. Keep a careful record of every search you make even if you find nothing. It will save you from searching the same records again at a later stage.
If you can't prove it leave it out of your family tree--many of us do not verify GET THE PROOF.

Thank you, Thank you.. I so wish more people would stick to the importance of being correct. I cannot tell you the nightmare's I have spent on one of our families in Research.
Although, you know in your heart and mind this is where they belong, this is who they are.. Unless you can prove it, you cannot use it. I found a family listing posted online the other day, realizing they had taken the elements of one brother to put on another family, I sent the researcher he compiled brothers on census. The response I received, "Well, he was the only one by that name, that fit". Thank you again...

A major thing is sources. Many people don't even attach the sources to their facts. I couldn't imagine going back and having to enter sources for all of my facts. Do it when you find new information.

I also like the idea of keeping track of searches even when you don't find anything. I've found that doing the same search again later on sometimes does turn up the information I didn't find before (i.e., obituaries on Ancestry.com). Many genealogy programs now have some type of log where you can keep track of your searches.
