The Great Turtle Race

Just a quick note to let you know about the Great Turtle Race a neat vehicle to inform and get people interested in the plight of the Pacific Leatherback. You can check out the race (sattelite tagged leatherbacks) at www.greatturtlerace.org I am a teacher (in the last week of "teaching" and checking in on the turtles is now part of our morning routine. We also checked out TOPPS site, where you can watch the movement of Pacific pelagics.

Hi Karen! I agree, this project is awesome. Thanks for reminding me of this project; I became familiar with it last year. What do your students find most interesting about it? Is it the 'live from the field' appeal? The turtles themselves? Both?

Sorry for the late reply, I was in St Thomas study reef fish. Neat project, great opportunity to hone scuba skills. Anyway, I think my interest (read that infatuation) with sea turtles was one of the key elements. It was also intriguing to the kids that some of these turtles started their journey right off our coast. It gave me the opportunity to talk about satellite tagging and we explored the TOPPS site as well, the pelagic site. It is one more way to connect kids to the ocean.
