Reading IS Doing Something!

Why do people think that if you're reading, you're open for conversation? Time after time, person after person. I'll be sitting outside, having a smoke & reading a book, or on the bus with a book, or *anywhere* reading -- and people (including my now-ex-husband) will plop down & just start talking. Just start talking, as if I've been waiting for them to show up!

It's not like I'm doing nothing! I'm READING, fer Chrissakes!!!!!!

Geez!

I can't really add anything to your post Martha, except, "Ain't it the truth."

I can relate to this one, people do it to me all the time! I always have a book while sitting in the waiting room at the doctor's office and someone will ask me what I'm reading and is it a good book. I want to tell them I am just looking at the pictures and no it is not good, it is terrible, that's why I'm reading it!!! The same thing at home if I'm sitting on my porch reading someone will stop and start talking. I find the only real place I can read is in the house. I have often wondered the same thing you wonder.........do they think we are doing nothing? I love to read and find the interruptions very bothersome, even more so when the person says "Oh, I never read" well I do and I'd love to finish my book!!! Happy reading :~)

That not only happens to me when I'm trying to read, but when I'm online doing my email. I'll here something like 'blah blah blah blah blah.....blah OK?' To which I say something clever like, 'Huh?'

Oh I so identify with this one. My man is always talking up a storm when I am reading.
But seems to have little to say when I am just sitting there! LOL!

Understand completely. I always take reading material on plane rides. It's a time when I most enjoy reading. I don't know why people think that because their seat is next to mine that I must be just waiting to hear their life story. They don't know me, I don't know them, we're probably never going to see each other again, so I don't care about what little johnny looked like in his 3rd grade picture, etc. I usually remain polite for about 1 minute, then say something like, 'I'm sorry, I'd like to get back to my book now.'

I'll just bet that these are people who, themselves, do not read books.

I find this especially maddening on planes ... usually I open a book immediately and some "Chatty Cathy" will constantly interrupt with mindless conversation.

I used to be really timid about ignoring them ... Now I just say "You'll have to excuse me for being rude, but I intend to finish this book before the plane lands, so I just don't have time for conversation.

It never fails, open and book, and someone wants you to do something else. Disgusting, why don't they learn to read?

If I want company, all I have to do is open a book and either someone shows up or calls-darn it. Also, my doggy always has to "go" the minute I get settled and my cat is actually a terrible bookmark--hee hee and I can't see through him.

Mine is also with writing. I always carry a notebook with me and do much of my writing at coffee shops, at airports, etc. And people keep interrupting me.
