A long time, minimum of 2-6 weeks. Don't give up hope. Plant in the ground once you have a few leaves and good root system.
My mom started a seed once, and when it got big enough she planted it in the ground...many years later had a HUGE tree and lots of avocados.

It can take quite a while, up to three months sometimes, so be patient. Here are a few tips that have worked for me: Soak the pit in water, preferably in a clear container (plastic or glass), and change the water every few days (don't let it get cloudy). I have done this by using a clear plastic cocktail cup or deli container and suspending the pit in the water using three toothpicks stuck in the pit and balanced on the lip of the cup. To germinate, at least part of the pit must have access to direct light. A tap root will form first, then other subsidiary roots, and then the pit will split and a stem will sprout. Plant it in a pot or container with the tip of the pit is still exposed, and place near an east or southeast window that gets lots of sun. Good luck!
