Amazon Riverboat Project

I have been on 7 Earthwatch projects and this one was unique. With most projects your schedule is very set and you all work together. This project was like being on a cruise. There was down time at the beginning and end of the trip as the boat moved up and down the river from Iquitos to our work site. Once we settled in, everyone got to pick and choose which part of the project they wanted to work on that day. The early risers headed out to search for Mcaws. The late night crowd hunted caimen after dark. During the day you could hike along a trail looking for wildlife or go searching for dolphins. Perhaps counting wading birds appealed to you or you could join in with the local fishermen to do some fishing. Feeling energetic, sign up for a couple trips out. Not up to par? Just do one project and snooze the rest of the day. Just sitting on the deck provided wonderful photo ops and lots to watch. This was a wonderful introduction to the riches of the Amazon.

Sounds wonderful! I think it would be fun to hunt caimen at night... but I'm sure not everyone would be interested :)

And I'm amazed at the number of different animals that have been seen on this expedition. Pink river dophins - they really are pink - and various monkeys, and all kinds of fish - some of which are supposed to be very tasty (and not endangered).

I've also heard that being on the water is much less buggy than staying on land - and I believe the boat has air conditioning :)

Glad you had a good time. What other expeditions have you been on? What's the most unusual thing you've done?

I have also been on the Polar Bear project and a project with the National Park Service in Maine(both no longer running). I have done the Lions and the Elephants of Tsavo, Medicinal Herbs in Antiquity in Rome and the Wari Indians in Peru. The most unusual? Tough question but my favorite was the Polar Bear project. They are amazing creatures and the PI was great. The Wari Indian dig was amazing and Mary is wonderful to work with. I definitely intend to do more archaelogical projects.

As an aside, I wish there was a way to spell check these postings!
