Edible Weeds

Does anyone cook with lawn ornaments (dandelions, violets etc). I've found some interesting recipes online, but I'd like to hear from anyone with experience.

Thanks

I used to cook fiddlers fern every spring. Just steam them and add a little salt and butter. They taste much like asparagus with a hint of a perfume. I no longer cook them because I have lost many trees on my property and enjoy seeing the ferns full grown.

If you are fortunate enough to have Purslane growing in your garden, it can be steamed like spinach, but hubby and I just enjoy it raw in salad. We also put fresh nasturtium flowers on top both as decoration and extra flavor.
A bit of humor on this: Ever since I told him about it (unexpected edibles like Purslane and Nasturtiums) he enjoys startling people visiting by reaching down, breaking off a piece, and munching on it (assuming it's in our own non-pesticide yard).

I'm lucky in that I have wild onions, garlic, plums, blackberry, apples and poke salat available to me on our property. I use young dandelion greens in salads along with the veggies and herbs in the garden also.

Violets, and other wild flowers. You can poor a sugar syrup that you make from sugar, let them dry and you can a pretty garnish for a cake or something for a fruit salad. You can make dandilion wine. I have not made any since I was younger. You can dry the roots and make tea out of it. It make you run to the toilet if you need a water pill this is it. You can make dasiy chain out of them for your hair.
You can mix it with Camomile, and seep them in hot water for about 5 minutes and poor it over your hair, if it is bloond. It perks up your hair.
The Marshmellow plant grow as a weed, you use it in a sald. Rince wel or use a soap to wash well they can have weed killer on them, they can make you sick. Your garden weeds have a purepus. Get a book on native planrs for your area, and look them. Because a dought, you may want to culivate them as a plant to keep doen soil errostion. Have blessed weekend.

I have always know certain so called weeds were edible but wasn't sure too many ate them anymore. My family is from the mid-west and south so you hear the stories but that is about it. I know some cookbooks have recipes too. How neat that you all are really using these so called weeds for food. That is great.

Anna don't worry about your spelling I understood everything you wrote so that is all that matters. Great tips. Thanks to you and everyone who responded.

There is a plant called Purslane that I am going to start growing once I find some seeds. It is a common weed that my mother would stir fry and add a chile sauce. In Spanish the dish is called Verdolagas if I am not mistaken. I will have to check on that. However, to my surprise, I was watching Oprah one day and Dr. Oz. came on and was speaking about it's heath benefits. Back in the day when my mom would ask me to fetch some from people's lawns I felt and looked like and and idiot but ultimately who knew?
