This happened last week in Matamoros, but I just came across it today.

Did I read it right? Only one bicyclist died? And how did they get that photo? What a photo!

That is tragic. Here in Mexico they certainly don't spare the gory details.

My son decided to get his college degree in photography. Since Colorado has many bicycle events each year, he would take his vacation time and follow the races. He has had photos published in many venues, such as Sports Illustrated and Bicycling Magazine, and has won many awards for his pictures.

A picture like that is a case of being in the 'right' place at the 'right' time.

Mexico has no conventions as to 'sensitivity' when it comes to the media.

The newspapers in every city I have ever been in here are filled with pictures of dead bodies, not covered in any way, grieving relatives, gory wounds, and astoundingly insenstivie interviews.

People being arrested are referred to by the media as 'the criminal', the 'perpetrator', the 'robber', the 'killer', and never with the mitigating 'alleged' in front of it. All before these people even get to the police station to be booked! LOL

No wonder drivers involved in bad accidents run away from the scene, and often from the area.

Ohhhhh yeah, the accident thing! A car accident is a major offense and ALL parties involved have to go to the police. Often, whomever has the most money is set free, guilty or not. That's why they run, plus most cars are uninsured. I am only speaking according to what I've heard, not from direct experience.

A young nurse I once worked with in Colorado drove her Volkswagen Bug to Mexico with another friend. They were hit by a truckload of drunk Mexicans, the car totaled, and the nurse jailed with a broken leg that did not receive medical attention. She was eventually able to contact a lawyer friend in Los Angeles, who went to Mexico, bribed the officials, and got her out of jail. She returned to our hospital where the best orthopaedic surgeon rebroke her leg and set it so it would heal properly.
