I would never ..... Would you?
I have read a few comments about peaking at the end of a book. I would never, ever peak at the end of a book. It would be like looking at the end of a DVD.
I would never bend over a page in a book.
I would never bend over a paperback so I can hold it with one hand.
I would never throw away an undamaged book.
I might write in a book but I would more then likely use a post it.
Isn't it funny what little rule we set up for ourselves.
What would you never do?
I write in my cookbooks - the "everyday" ones, not the really old ones I've collected thru the years.
I use Post-It flags to mark favorite passages.
And I must confess to peeking at the end of the book sometimes. Never used to, now, if I'm not 100% sold on the book I'll peek to see if it's worth continuing.
First of all, I confess that I do do all of those things on your list, except that I've probably only looked at the ending of a book a couple of times, but I know, it still counts. LOL
Some things I WOULDN'T do are:
Write in a library book, or a book belonging to somebody else, unless they specifically told me to.
Loan a special book of mine to somebody I don't know well enough to trust with its safekeeping.
Make fun of somebody for their choice of reading material.
Gosh, there should be more, maybe I'll think of some later. Interesting thread. :)
Have a different take on the things I'd never do because I was a librarian for almost 40 years.
I'd never write in a book (except college texts I didn't plan on selling)
I never bend down the edges of a page
I find it hard to throw out books so I share them with others or donate them to local charitable sales
You have all covered what I do with books. I really don't like it when my husband turns the corners down in books to save his place...but they are usually his books and he saves them all. I like to share mine and only save a few that I really like.
I will never loan someone a book that doesn't appreciate the value of good LITERATURE.
I bend pages in paperbacks but never my hardbacks.
I will break the spine of paper backs.
I will write in paperbacks.
I do the last three things b/c to me, it means the book is loved. My husband on the hand doesn't even want me touching his books - he wants them pristine. I say what good is a book that just looks like it sits on your shelf like a chotske (spelling?)
I will never NOT dust off my hardbacks when they need it.
I do take off the dust jacket while I read.
I would never do any of those things either. I read a lot of library books, and you cannot believe some of the damage done to them inside. Stains, bent pages, I am especially careful with library books, or special books. Sometimes in a health book, or say an astrology book, that I own, I will make notes. Otherwise No. One time a library book I got had penciled in corrections of how the last reader disagreed with certain things. How RUDE.
I admit to looking at the ending more now than I ever used to. I just don't want to waste my time with a book that ends poorly [IMHO, of course]
But the other things -- I would never mark a book or turn down corners and I take special care of the books I read that do not belong to me. I have had books go missing after being lent, so I tend not to lend out the very special ones -- the others, I pass on to whoever will read them and I don't expect those back. I haunt used bookstores, Salvation Army, DAV, Goodwill stores, yard sales to try to replace the missing ones....
I don't write in library books or loaners; I have erased other peoples markings; I don't dog ear a page, unless it has been previously dog eared by someone else. Have you noticed a fairly new phenomenon (folks use their fingernail or thumbnail to etch a place marker on a page?) I have bookmarks to mark places; I don't crack-the-backs of paperbacks. I always return books that have been loaned to me (sometimes it takes awhile); I get grumpy when a book I have loaned never comes back; I don't peek at the ending, unless the book is being really stupid and I'm bordering on "unreadable", then I MIGHT peek. I treat my books and those from the library with dignity and love and keep my own books well past the point where they should have "left the nest". I don't, however, always dust my hardbacks. I know, I'm a baaad book-mama!

Ah! I have done it all. I do take very good care of library books and others that have been loaned to me. But I have set a rule for myself to share the books that I really like alot, not just the ones I want to get rid of. I have found new authors that I like by the generosity of others that shared a book. Mary
