The Great Turtle Race II!
The second Great Turtle Race has begun! Eleven tagged sea turtles are being followed from their nesting sites to their foraging grounds. You can follow their journeys, and find out more about sea turtles at: view link
From the Great Turtle Race blog: "For more than 100 million years, leatherback turtles have graced our oceans. At an astonishing eight feet long and up to 2,000 pounds, they journey between continents and dive to incredible depths. But in the last 10 years, 95% of the leatherbacks in the Pacific Ocean have vanished, victims of human pressures."
If you'd like to hear more about one turtle's journey, visit professional photographer David Barron's website, where he recounts the story of Adelita, the loggerhead turtle: view link
There are many ways you can help save the sea turtles. Drs. Frank Paladino, James Spotila and Richard Reina have been working with Earthwatch volunteers for over 15 years, helping to ensure the survival of the leatherbacks and their nesting habitat in Costa Rica: view link
The Leatherback Trust website: view link contains much information about sea turtles, and the conservation efforts of Dr. Paladino and others in Costa Rica.
One of the fundraising efforts of the Leatherback Trust is a relationship with Coope Tarrazu, a Costa Rican coffee cooperative, who also work with Earthwatch to improve the sustainability of their agriculture. You can buy their excellent Baulas Blend coffee and help the turtles at the same time! view link
Enjoy the turtle race!
