Since You Asked

Hello all. I am new to this group, and have been slowly stewing over the last few months, but today I'm allowing myself to vent. Until recently, I was as happy as a clam doing a job I loved (medical transcription)from home. I worked 10-12 hours per day, six days a week, but the benefits were numerous; didn't have to put much gas in the car, no need for extensive/expensive wardrobe, etc. My employer had many accounts, and work was steadily available, with only occasional lapses. Three months ago, all of that came to a standstill when I learned that those accounts had been outsourced to India by the clients. To date, they have not returned. So here I sit; too young to retire, too old to start a new career and compete with the new college grads. Needless to say, jobs are at a minimum, and although I have sent out resumes, made many phone calls, etc., I've had no luck. Two of my friends working in different fields have experienced similar situations.

It seems to me that the government has not only sold us down the river, but has totally turned its back on the American citizens who really want and need to work. While we're busy rebuilding third-world countries and tending to their needs, our own infrastructure has gone to Hell. They not only handed our jobs to foreign citizens, but presented them on a silver platter, to the point that Americans who have paid into the system all of their adult lives are now standing in the welfare lines.

Am I pissed off?? You bet I am, but what good will come of it? When the military can outsource a billion-dollar contract to a foreign country (are there no security issues here?), I have damn little hope that my job will come back.

There's more. I applied to several online companies over the weekend. After downloading applications, uploading resumes, etc., I received an automated e-mail message stating that while they do not hire in my state, they are pleased to announce a new facility in...get ready....you know what's coming...India!!! I give up.

I can feel you there. Every time I need to speak with someone about one of my bills, I get someone who cannot speak English very well. Most companies now a days are using people in India for a lot of things. How can you dispute a bill with someone who has no idea of what you are saying?? We are being outsourced for everything. I hate that.

Best of luck on getting another job.
It's true. Government is not worried about the "little people." All of them will be getting paid whether they are actually working or not.

So sorry to hear your situation. The sad fact is all of our jobs are leaving, we seem to be left with service jobs which pay little to nothing, and especially without benefits, and not usually even full time jobs[so they don't have to offer benefits] is sickening. I sure wish you the best of luck in finding new employment. Meanwhile we are always here to vent to.

Any suggestions on how to change it? We all seem to not like it, yet it continues to grow. What can we do? Perhaps we can blanket our elected officials with letters voicing our concerns about outsourcing. At the very least they could require that the companies who utilize outsourcing to foreign countries let us know that up front instead of hiding the information in some literature lost among the fine print, if they print it at all. As long as the practice remains profitable for the company they will continue it. It has little to do with building the economy of third world nations, it is just greed, plain and simple.

Welcome to the group masschick and good luck in finding another job. The outsourcing is one of the biggest challenges facing the US and it doesn't appear anyone in govt. is doing anything about it.

Welcome mass chick--I know what you are going through. I have been searching for a job since mine ended last June. I have applied to just about everything I can think of but no luck yet. Our area is in really bad shape and there is no way I can afford to move. I am taking an online medical transcription course and now it sounds like there won't be anything out there when I finish. Bummer! My last unemployment check came last week and I have no idea what I'm going to do. I have investigated some work-at-home jobs and they all are scams. In fact, I just got a letter form someone I have never heard of wanting me to send a dollar to the person on the list and then add my name at the bottom. She said she made over $500,000--riiiiiiiight--I really believe that. The sorry thing is, some people will fall for it and that is a crying shame. I am also getting tired of trying to understand people when I have to call customer service. You are right--those of us who have paid into the system and have done it honestly are getting left in the dust--big companies and the government don't give a damn about us--as long as they keep on getting their perks and bonuses. You've come to the right place to be pissed off so cut lose and vent!

I feel for you and hope you find a new job soon.
Maybe we should start outsourcing CEOs and their paychecks, maybe then we'll start seeing jobs come back to the USA.

Remenber a few yrs ago when some knucklehead or knuckleheads were going to turn over the security of all the US ports to Saudi Arabia ? How many ppl were going to be thrown out of work then? And it only took just about every US citizen going ballistic for them to shelve the idea,, It's not just good ol dubya,, this whole administration is just sucking all they can from the country and thinking to hell with everyone else,, I heard somewhere that Bush has bought himself 10,000 acres in Nicaragua or Brazil or something for him to "retire" on. He's a lame duck now so he doesn't give a damn on how he leaves this country,, a big change from 4 yrs ago when he was telling everyone he was the only one who could save us from being over run by Muslims and restore America's status in the world.. I said it then and now,, from watching him on TV back then,, it always seemed like he had this cheshire cat look on his face ,, like he was thinking " yea ,, I'm f**king all of you idiots"

I couldn't agree with you more. I just buried my second husband, mother-in-law kicking me out of our home, at 51, after being widowed twice, I seemingly can get no assistance at all. I worked for 11 months, for one of the same companies. When they decided we all needed to become "Employees" instead of independent contractors, they waited til my birthday, locked me out of the system, and said I hadn't sent in forms, I had faxed to them three times!!! I understand your frustration!!!!

I can truly empathize with your situation. I got "RIFed" out of the best-paying job I had ever had at age 59. It was quite a career change for me to get that job in my mid-50s.

Sooooo, I went through another career change in my early 60s. It wasn't easy to find any kind of job at my age, but I was willing to take a cut in pay and work part-time if necessary. After one bad misstep of going to work for a "tax accountant" who was a real SOB, I landed a part-time job as an administrative assistant. My navy specialty as a Personnelman from all those years ago finally paid off.

At the time, my wife still had a very good job with the company that had RIFed me, so part-time work was helping pay the bills. Then she got cancer and suddenly couldn't work any more. The non-profit company that had hired me as a part-timer found a way to give me full-time hours with benefits, including medical/dental insurance, by giving me two part-time jobs. It's a hassle sometimes trying to juggle the two jobs, but God bless those folks for finding a way to help me -- and them.

The point I'm trying to make is that it is not too late to change careers if you're willing to set your sights a little lower than you might like. It will not be easy finding new employment, but you already know that. But if you keep plugging, keep looking, you can find something to help pay the bills.

Have you posted your resume on Monster.com and all of the other online job sites? Monster has really improved since I first tried it nearly 10 years ago. I believe there are some job networking groups right here on Eons.

Outsourcing SUCKS! Companies do it to save money and they'll tell you that they do it to save YOU money on their products and services and stay competitive. Well, I suppose there's some truth in that, but they sure as hell don't try to cut the salaries of their CEOs and top brass to save money.

Don't give up Masschick! End of pep talk.
