Yes...we should! Go to another country, even for a brief visit, and you are glad you live in the USA! We are not always going to be right on everything, but we should learn from our mistakes and from history. If we cave in to pressure from the liberal mindset and the international community to change our make-up in order to be more "acceptable" to the world, we will lose our uniqueness. We should be proud of our history and our achievements as well as the lessons we have learned along the way.
No USA bashing here!!
Yes I always fall back on that quote when I find a policy or direction going in a way I dislike. MY COUNTRY. It doesn't mean that you have to "agree with", or "like" a politician, or policy, but you do support the Nation. There is a huge difference between an individual person or policy and your Country.
Oh my. Thanks for posting that.
I remembered his name but not what he was famous for or his quote. I wonder how many Americans even remember his name today.
I wonder if things were less muddled all those years ago and we have become so convoluted because of the ever decreasing size of the world and globalism.
In response, I will echo Senator Schurz's words - on February 29, 1872, Senator Carl Schurz of Missouri made the following remark on the floor of the United States Senate:
"....My country; and my country is the great American Republic. My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right."...
It goes without saying that no other country in this world provides for its citizens, more in the way of personal rights, freedoms and opportunities - including the right to publically castigate this country's representatives, policies and actions in open forum.
I once gave a personal pledge to give my life for my country and I would do it again without thought or pause - I think that much of what this country has given and continues to give to me and to my countrypeople.
So, despite the fact that I may dissent with the U.S.'s policies and actions on occasion, I would die to defend those policies and actions, right or wrong, in order to preserve the right to elect our policy makers by popular vote and to foster an environment that continues to provide for our personal freedoms.
Thanks, Sharkey, for once again reminding us what it means to be an American and the responsibility(s) that our U.S. citizenship carries with it.
was the term intercourse used in the profane mode as in When we intercourse over another country then I would say no.
yichel (Isn't this the famous winner of the second barbary war and died in a duel with another captain? thanks for getting the quote correct during the 1960's it was misrepresented.)
One last comment and then I'll get off my soapbox - this country is only as good as the people(s) who formed, manage and preserve her governmental, economic and political systems - we've had a few significant misstarts in our history, but we have corrected the preponderance of these with time by applying moral, ethical and somethimes physical intervention. I think this country has attracted, promoted and required service of its best and brightest (on average, can't always support the popular political choice - but, then I again I am ensured that right) - and we need to stay this course in order to preserve this culture for our descendents.
I believe this country is the best the world has to offer! Warts and all! Disagreemant with SOME of our ways and policies should not negate it goodness and rightness of our whole country. I was taught to love this country and always will. It is the right thing to do,in my opinion.
Our history is full of greatness.....great people bringing a great concept to fruition by which people of the world can strive and hope to obtain......Freedom and Democracy.....we are the standard bearers......its not Socialism and its not Entitlements.....our history is full of wars that were fought to perserve our way of life.....I just hope and pray that those that follow in the footsteps of our brave forefathers dont give it away......
Yes, it is a statement with which I fully agree. We have a system of government that allows people who think the country is wrong can make their voices heard and if the majority believe we are wrong, they can change things.
