What Is A Jigsaw?

Once upon a time, when life was much simpler, a jigsaw was a bench mounted machine that utilized a coping saw blade. This I learned to use at a very young age. If someone mentioned a jigsaw, I knew exactly what they were talking about. Then, there appeared on the market, a hand held device doing much the same thing, this was named the Saber Saw. Again, life was simple and I knew exactly what we were talking about.
Somewhere along the line, the difference between these two became blurred, both were being called jigsaws. So, someone smarter than me started calling the handheld version a Scroll saw. Okay, back to something I could understand again. That didn't last long. Suddenly the bench mounted jigsaw was being called a scroll saw too. Confusion once again reigned supreme.
I believe it was the Milwaukee company who chose to muddy the waters even further, they produced something called a Reciprocating Saw, trade name, Sawsall. This name didn't stick either as it was soon known as the big jigsaw.
So please forgive me if when you mention a jigsaw, scroll saw, or any variation thereof, I don't have any idea of what we're talking about... Ron

Wow, I haven't heard the term "saber saw" used in years! Maybe we should just call everything a toothed woodcutter :^)

Nah, that won't work Mass.. A toothed woodcutter could be a lumberjack who still has his teeth... ;~)

If you feed him enough whiskey he'll jump around like a jigsaw though :^)

Have a good weekend Ron!

A saw is a saw! Makes no difference to me, I can't cut a straight line with any of them! I go by the red saw, or the green saw, or the blue saw!

wow thunder, your right, i remember calling it a scroll saw for years, and when they came out with the bench version (now called a scroll saw) i was confused. i have never seen the bench version of a jig saw, but my hand held one, is a always there, in my hand. circular saws are just to powerful for me.

and the saws all, doesnt saw it all, by any means, and really kilz my back.

for loko, i will admit, its the gray one. the black one died, the red one is too heavy and so on.

thanx for the history lesson.

Believe it or not hippiemama, there once was a circular hand held saw that was to much for me. This belonged to a contractor I was working for. I think it was made by Skil, had a 12" blade and worm drive. The blade guard didn't rotate, but folded back and became a second handle. Took two hands to operate this monster, but it would cut through a 4X8 timber in one pass.
Today, you can find small circular saws on the market that I believe you can handle. I've a small 3.5" Skil that's battery powered. I use this to cut sheets of plywood down to size before unloading them from my truck. Plywood seems to have gotten a lot heavier in the last twenty years.
You may want to look into getting one of these, they're not all that intimidating..

Black & Decker has a saw called the Zip Saw out! This is one fine jig saw! It will go through a 2 X 4 in 10 seconds flat with an 18 tooth blade! I'm impressed!
