With back problems, you need to discuss with a yoga teacher what they can offer and what you should and should not do.
Thank you for the comment. Yes, that will be something I will definately do. I just haven't researched enough to know what type of yoga to do . It must be the very beginning since I haven't practiced it before.
I recommend Iyengar yoga for your back. If you are in the LA area, there is a teacher named Chris Stein who teaches at Yogaworks Westwood, Yogaworks Montana (Santa Monica) and the Iyengar Institute in West Hollywood who would be very good for you. Yoga is not only good for your back, but it can be good for your social life as well. I've made so many wonderful friends thru yoga. As we get older it becomes even more important to maintain our social contacts. Yoga is great for staying connected and meeting new friends. If you would like to see more of what I've posted about yoga, see my profile. If you have specific questions, send me a message and I'll try to answer them. If you aren't in the LA area and want to know if there is an Iyengar teacher in your area, I can help you with that as well.
hello lahope,
Thank you for your comments here. Unfortunately I do not live in Calif. I am in Arlington, Texas. I have only begun looking into yoga and never knew there were so many forms of it. If you know of anyone here that practices that type, please let me know. Thanks again.
I've been taking yoga classes for about two years, but just resolved about six months ago to do some every day, seven days a week, not just the two days a week that I had class.
I used to get sore backs all the time. Doing yoga every day has strengthened my back and stomach muscles. I sometimes get a little sore when I have been mowing the lawn or lifting a grandchild, but it usually feels better the next day--not the nagging backaches that I used to have for days and weeks.
I highly recommend yoga. Start slow and do a little every day. It works.
Thank you for your information, I will be looking into it soon. Not exactly where to start looking for the one that will not injure my back and knees.
I would recommend hatha yoga because it is equal parts stretching, breathing and relaxing.
Hi my friend,
Go to www.indiadivine.org/newsletter.
The page will open-up your door to
Yoga and synthesis of Yoga. So far
as back problem is concerned, few
simple yogasana,s or yogic postures
would give you much needed relief.
This asana,s are just a form of physical
exercise like aerobics,jogging,stretching
likewise.
Welcome to our group GoldenLeaves. I totally agree with the excellent reponses from the members of our group. I think the real key for you is to get a very experienced Yoga instructor who will know your strengths and limits, and hopefully he or she will slowly instruct you gradually.
Good luck to you..Namaste
Hi everyone...
Thank you all for the helpful comments here. Iloveyoga, I will check out hatha yoga and POLLYSson, indeed I will definately want an instructor that is qualified for my back and my dear friend, vasudev, I will go to the website you mentioned and see what is there.
I do believe that I must have an instructor that has knowledge of scoliosis of the spine. I also know that with proper instructions I can build up my back and stomach muscles to help hold my back in better alignment and by doing so that will aleviate alot of the pain. Fortunately the pain is only when standing and not all the time. It may take a while to find the right one but with all your help, it should make it a little easier.
Thank you all for your interest and help.
