URGENT - COCOA MULCH IS DEADLY TO PETS

I know this is not a pet list, but many of you have pets and I thought it was important that y'all knew about this.

URGENT - COCOA MULCH IS DEADLY TO PETS
Cocoa Mulch, is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other garden

supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats.
It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution, check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.

Theobromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate especially dark or baker's
chocolate which is toxic to dogs.

Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine

Over the weekend the owner of two young Lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from
Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep
cats away from their garden.

Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large
amount. She vomited a few times but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Calypso
had a seizure and died .

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the
company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have
shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of
degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'

True information about the mulch can be found here - view link

Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dogthat ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch
made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

In July 2007, "Moose," a 3-year-old Labrador belonging to a Minneapolis couple, died after

eating cocoa mulch purchased at a local store. His owners had a veterinarian at the University of Minnesota perform a necropsy to determine the likely cause of death of their young and previously healthy pet. The vet found cocoa shells in Moose's stomach and evidence of theobromine in the shells.

Please email the manufacturer and request that accurate information about this product
be posted on the packaging to avoid further tragedy.

PLEASE GIVE THIS THE WIDEST DISTRIBUTION!!! Copy & paste into a NEW email.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)

confirms the deadly side effects of theobromine dogs.

Paul and I have no pets currently that go outside, all we have currently is our litte Yanni , our male Long haired Guinea Pig, BUT there are a lot of dogs here at the apartment complex, and a lot of the ones around near US, are not exactly the smartest dog owners in the world. In fact I don't understand why anyone would even give or let some of them even have a dog, in the first place. Let's just say a few slices short of a loaf. In any case, I have posted this on our myspace blog for all to see to.
Thank you for sharing. Paul and I read ALL labels cause most companies don't care what they oput in their stuff, just out to make money.

Thanks so much for this bit of information.

I looked it up on Snopes and this is very true. Hersey's reply... "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that have eaten Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to certain degrees (depending on each individual dog). However 98% of the dogs will not eat it."

Yeah, well I guess that statement is supposed to get them off the hook. I still do not understand why it is used in mulch????
