God Obsolete?

view link
An opportunity to engage in a discussion of the big questions.
Does science make belief in God obsolete?

No,but only if...
We must "reinvent the sacred," but it is dangerous: it implies that the sacred is invented. For billions of believers this is Godless heresy. Yet how many gods have we worshiped down the eons? It is we who have told our gods what is sacred, not they who have told us.-Stuart Kauffman

You have two distinct and disturbing questions here, WOT.

Is God Obsolete

and

Do we invent our own sacredness, or is it handed down to us from the deity(ies).

To discuss question No 1, we must agree that that there is, in fact, a god to be obsolete. If we believe there is no god, then there is no god to be obsolete, and the question is moot. If we believe there is in fact a god, then the question is irrelevant.

I am more interested in the second question because of the scope of the definition of sacred and god(s).

The invention of the sacred. Whether we believe in a deity or not, we all believe in the sacred. We all have something that is sacred to us. We created it. We invented it. Whether we consider it divinely sacred or personally sacred, that sacred something exists for each of us.

In some cases, we believe in a socially agreed upon sacred something. In other cases, it is profoundly personal. But it exists for all of us.

The last article at this site is titled:

No,but only if...

It is more about definitions. If a god is one and the same as natural laws then the big conflict of science and beliefs is (almost) resolved.

For the majority their is a need to believe in a diety. It is as if we are built that way. I have felt sad for atheists who have no one greater then themselves to thank.
For me the issue is the interpretation of the bible and how that has lead to conflict. Maybe people will always believe in the lord but reinterprete the bible. I have a pretty cool ten commandments for the 21 century that has felt right, evem though i tend to be more of a traditionalist.

An interesting question, because as I understand it, the
study of science was originally intended to "prove" the existence of God -
rather than its current adversarial position.

*********
How far back are your intentions going? Anyone particular you are thinking about?

Not sure science is out to prove anything or had an original intention or design.
Science will disprove its on ideas as more information and testing is done.
Many devout people in all cultures have been on the cutting edge of scientific developments.
