Some Will Not Understand This

I am a collector/pack rat/ephemera maven/artist. About twenty-five years ago I began saving candy wrappers. It might have been because they were from other countries or that I thought they were pretty. The popular candy bars and boxes changed packaging and I saved them too. Some candy disappeared from shelves and I know I did not eat it all.

So here I am in a large home with cabinets full of candy wrappers. I have done my "estate" planning, but, oh, those wrappers! It had always been on my Projects List to make an assemblage of the wrappers, as artfully as I was able. When I begin to sort the wrappers I discover those that are no longer made. What is a chocoholic to do? Surely it is not the last one in existence-- or is it? What if I discarded something that was valuable? or collectible? What if my sons must deal with them?

Shall I do my assemblage? Photograph them and publish a hot chocolate table book? Keep procrastinating?

1st - you MUST eat the chocolate. Like a good wine, it is made to be enjoyed. Chocolate on the shelf is a waste.

Then you can make your assemblage or leave it for your sons to clean up. Can you imagine them going through box after box of candy wrappers? If you want to have a laugh at their expense, put something of value (in the world's eye) in the first bunch of wrappers. Then they'll have to go through each and every one to make sure they don't throw anything away that would be useful. (I can be a real stinker sometimes!)

Oh I ate all of the chocolate! Great idea--thinking cubic zirconias, unset in velvet bags.

I DO understand! Okay I don't collect candy wrappers but I do understand the urge to collect, or to view the artistic color, design of these small 'works of art'. Am I nuts?

Yes, be sure to eat all things chocolate first!

Now as far as assembling them....hmmmm are they badly wrinkled? Can they be ironed nice and flat? Maybe put them in photo albums for display, to make them neat and tidy. Put some of your absolute favorites in a picture frame for decorating a wall in your home?

If you have so many that they would fill many albums, are you up to alphabetizing them? Just think, you could actually touch and bring back candy memories by sorting and alphabetizing!

Oh, yes, take photos of them, not individually but in small groups! Would love to see the interesting designs, colors, artistic display, I'm a quilter and can just imagine turning an exciting wrapper into a small art quilt.... you got ME excited now, LOL!

Valuable? Yes, maybe! Do you want to part with them, some of them? Maybe you have lots of duplicates....get a large group together and see if you can sell them on eBay....oh you could buy more chocolate with the proceeds.

Now... we would love to see some photos of your collection! Post in gallery, please?

hugs sue

I can only think of one thing to do with candy wrappers but that is my artists eye and soul. Collage or several collages, it was a big thing back in the late 60's and early 70's for some of us poor starving art students to do found item works. I think it would be fun to work with maybe even using the wrapper colors like the photo montage format. My only concern would be to keep as many intact as possible to maintain possible historic value. Believe me, I understand!--W

I like the idea of selling duplicates on e-bay to buy more chocolate. What a wonderful bonus!
