we were in Germany back in the 80s and 90s..
being from Minnesota, I was not impressed with the black forest...just like northern Minnesota
very friendly people, fabulous food, great beer and wine...a very enjoyable country... make sure you goto the 'touristy' places...they are worth it..if possible, get Rick Steves dvd on black forest to get ideas for yourself
Europe in the summer is a madhouse...avoid traveling on the weekend and especially avoid any water destinations...there will be miles and miles of traffic
stay at pensions, avoid hotels unless you are in Heidelberg, then spend the extra couple of euros and stay at the Hollender Hof Hotel overlooking the Neckar River and Alte bruke (old bridge)...get a room facing the river...fantastic
the food,is like grandma used to make
bon journey

I LOVE Baden Baden for the casino and the shops for browsing; there are numerous spas for relaxing, Brenner's Park Hotel is good.
Just driving or training through the region is wonderful. Back roads and local trains are advised for full appreciation of the sights and feel of this unique European venue.
Stay at low cost pensions rather than high cost hotels. Ambiance is everywhere.
Eat some Black Forest Ham, and do try the Black Forest Cake (get a menu master thumb-indexed by course from Marling for translation of foods).
