What`s it all about?

What is Intelligent Design / Creationism all about? I live in Australia, and I never hear about any of this except when it is a big issue in the US. Nearly everyone here, and from what I understand, most other countries around the world, accepts evolution. From our perspective, it seems to be one of those "only in America" things.
I read a couple of science mags regularly, and have done for years. The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. As far as I can see, the evidence for creationism is nil. What am I missing out on?

If you look back im our messages you will find a video on the Creation Museum. This will give you an idea.
Nearly 50% of americans do not believe in evolution.

And we have a society controlled politically and religiously by radical conservatives.

Great question! Hope it will generate some discussion.

America has become threatened by a new kind of enemy. This enemy isn’t a nation or any specific leader. Instead, it is a enemy whose ideology plays a strong part in political thought and will not stop at anything until its ideas become the reigning law of the world. Most people would think I am referring to terrorism; but many of us believe the true enemy is evangelical religion.

In order to understand Americas preoccupation with religion, one has to understand the history of America.
It was populated by hunter gatherers who's Gods where many. Redicovered by a Catholic looking for the West Indies. Settled by colonial puritains from England who got pissed off at the reigning monarchy. Suceded from that monarchy and created a new independent state built on puritainistic ideals that where not totally shared by all the colonies, but for the sake of unity became the ruling laws in principle, one nation under a God.

Thats the basics of it.
