REGRET NOT

My teenage son taught me this lesson about 15 years ago when he got tired of me feeling guilty that some of my life's choices had turned out so badly. Smart kid!

REGRET NOT

Regret not!
Do not dwell on the past;
You cannot change it.

If the choices you've made
Eat at you, ask yourself
One question:

Knowing what I knew then
(And with ONLY that knowledge),
And, being the person
That I was then,
Did I do the best I could?

If the answer is yes,
What more could you ask for?
Learn from your mistakes;
Try not to make the same ones again.
Let the past affect your present
And your future in only that way.

If the answer was no,
I believe you lie to yourself.
For why would the past eat at you now?
Go back and look at the person you were
And what you knew then...
And ask again,
DID I DO THE BEST I COULD?

Wise son, and wise mother to listen to him so and honor his insights with your poem.

Do you believe in miracles? Well, this poem is one!!!
I have been wallowing in regret for the past 2 weeks and I really, really needed to read this.
I don't have the words to thank you!

that's true. And we cannot re-live the past, and we don't know the future, so all we really have is the present..we only know what we know when we know it!
Wonderful you, to have a wonderful son! Blessings. --PJ

Oh yes, mothergeorge, oh yes - this lesson is a life saver.

And likewise, I strive to realize - those who have affected my life in a negative way - if I can accept my own shortcomings, I can accept they were too doing the best they could . . .

I loved this. We make choices in the time frames our minds are in at the time.
If I had not made some of the choices the good things would not have happened, the bad things happened to smarten me up! LOL! Nice work!
