lyrics that speak to you

I heard this song on the radio in the car today -- Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel -- and I remembered how the first time I ever heard that song back in my college days the lyrics really spoke to me, somewhere deep down inside -- so much so that I had to run out and buy the albumn.

That got me thinking about other songs that I like primarily because of the lyrics -- the music may be great or even excellent, but what really gets to me is the lyrics for some reason. Another one that came to mind immediately was Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here.

So I got the idea for this thread -- maybe some of you have songs like that -- the lyrics really mean something to you, or really hit you deep down -- or you just like the lyrics because they are stupid -- or maybe they express something that you would never dare speak out loud but you will sing about -- or for any reason at all --

Maybe it's not the whole song -- maybe it's just one line or stanza...

You get the idea....

Solsbury hill

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night

He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
I had to listen had no choice

I did not believe the information
Just had to trust imagination
My heart was going boom boom, boom
Son, he said, grab your things, Ive come to take you home.

To keeping silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut

So I went from day to day
Tho my life was in a rut
till I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut

I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart was going boom boom boom
Hey, he said, grab your things, Ive come to take you home.
Yeah back home

When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free

Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes, but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me

Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart was going boom boom boom
Hey, I said, you can keep my things, theyve come to take me home.

Wish You Were Here

So, so you think you can tell
heaven from hell
blue skies from pain
can you tell a green field
from a cold steel rail?
a smile from a veil?
do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
your heros for ghosts?
hot ashes for trees?
hot air for a cool breeze?
cold comfort for change?
did you exchange
a walk on part in the war
for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here
we're just two lost souls
swimming in a fish bowl
year after year
running over the same old ground
what have we found?
the same old fears
wish you were here

Time --- by Pink Floyd

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desparation is the English way
The time is gone
The song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells

You done went and got me started girl.

The Ballad of Curtis Loew -- Lynyrd Skynyrd

Well I used to wake the mornin, before the rooster crowed. Searchin for soda bottles to get myself some dough.

Brought em down to the corner, down to the country store. Cash em in and give my money to a man named Curtis Lowe.

Old Curt was a black man, with white, curly hair. When he had a fifth of wine he did not have a care.

He used to own an old dobro, used to play it 'cross his knee. I'd give old Curt my money, he'd play all day for me.

Play me a song Curtis Lowe, Curtis Lowe. Well I got your drinkin money, tune up your dobro. People said he was useless, them people all were fools, cause Curtis Lowe was the finest picker to ever play the blues.

He looked to be sixty, and maybe I was ten. Mama used to warn me but I'd go see him again. I'd clap my hands, and stomp my feet, try to stay in time. He'd play me a song or two, then take another drink of wine.

Play me a song Curtis Lowe, Curtis Lowe. Well I got your drinkin money, tune up your dobro. People said he was useless, them people all were fools, cause Curtis Lowe was the finest picker to ever play the blues.

On the day Old Curtis died, nobody came to pray. Old preacher said some words, and they chucked him in the clay. Well he lived a lifetime, playin the black man's blues. And on the day he lost his life, that's all he had to do.

Play me a song Curtis Lowe, hey, Curtis Lowe. I wish that you was here so everyone would know. People said he was useless, them people all were fools, cause Curtis you're the finest picker to ever play the blues.

found 'em --

you don't think I type all that out, do you? I lok them up and cut and paste -- I am lazy -- lol

Is there something that you are trying to say
Don't hold back now
It's been a long time since I felt this way
So don't hold back now

I purposely forgot about
Loving anyone
Cause I'm the only one who has
Who has been stepped upon

Is there something that you are trying to say
Cause I can take it
Cause I grew up a man this way
And if I'm hurt I'll shake it

I'll crawl back into my cave
That's how I'll make it
Cause out of all this hurt we have
Beauty thus become
Beauty thus become

[Chorus:]
In the mourning I can see the sights
No wonder I could never keep you satisfied
In the mourning I can see inside
Myself and all the things that you were trying to hide
[Repeat]

Wishing all the best for you
And now I will say goodbye
Cause all the sh*t that we've been through
Put wisdom in my eyes

So walk away, don't turn around
Cause I won't be standing here
Cause all the lies that I've been living through
Are becoming very clear
And beauty thus become

[Chorus]

Then you conned me into thinking
That all I had was you
The small insinuations
Were cutting me through
Cutting me through

And now I stand alone here
Stronger than before
And I'll never go back
Never go back
Never go

OK, I'll stop. (after this one)

Turn Me On -- Norah Jones (originally by Nina Simone)

Like a flower
Waiting to bloom
Like a lightbulb
In a dark room
I'm just sittin here waiting for you
To come on home and turn me on

Like the desert waiting for the rain
Like a school kid waiting for the spring
Im just sitting here waiting for you
To come on home and turn me on

My poor heart
It's been so dark
Since youve been gone
After all your the one who turns me off
You're the only one who can turn me back on

My hi-fi's waiting for a new tune
My glass is waiting for some fresh ice cubes
I'm just sitting here waiting for you
To come on home and turn me on
Turn me on

I couldn't resist:

My analyst told me
That I was right out of my head
The way he described it
He said I'd be better dead than live
I didn't listen to his jive
I knew all along
That he was all wrong
And I knew that he thought
I was crazy but Im not
Oh no

My analyst told me
That I was right out of my head
He said I'd need treatment
But I'm not that easily led
He said I was the type
That was most inclined
When out of his sight
To be out of my mind
And he thought I was nuts
No more ifs or ands or buts

They say as a child
I appeared a little bit wild
With all my crazy ideas
But I knew what was happening
I knew I was a genius...
Whats so strange when you know
That you're a wizard at three
I knew that this was meant to be

Now I heard little children
Were supposed to sleep tight
Thats why I got into the vodka one night
My parents got frantic
Didnt know what to do
But I saw some crazy scenes
Before I came to
Now do you think I was crazy
I may have been only three
But I was swinging

They all laugh at angry young men
They all laugh at Edison
And also at Einstein
So why should I feel sorry
If they just couldn't understand
The idiomatic logic
That went on in my head
I had a brain
It was insane
Oh they used to laugh at me
When I refused to ride
On all those double decker buses
All because there was no driver on the top

My analyst told me
That I was right out of my head
But I said dear doctor
I think that it's you instead
Because I have got a thing
That's unique and new
To prove it I'll have
The last laugh on you
cause instead of one head
I got two
And you know two heads are better than one.

Hanging by a Moment by Lifehouse... yes I know it's more current but I like these lyrics. Not posting the entire song because it does repeat.

Desperate for changing
Starving for truth
I'm closer to where I started
Chasing after you
I'm falling even more in love with you
Letting go of all I've held onto
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you

Forgetting all I'm lacking
Completely incomplete
I'll take your invitation
You take all of me now...

I'm falling even more in love with you
Letting go of all I've held onto
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you
I'm living for the only thing I know
I'm running and not quite sure where to go
And I don't know what I'm diving into
Just hanging by a moment here with you

Here's another good one by the Dave Matthews Band. Again, a more recent song but nice...

You've got your ball
you've got your chain
tied to me tight tie me up again
who's got their claws
in you my friend
Into your heart I'll beat again
Sweet like candy to my soul
Sweet you rock
and sweet you roll
Lost for you I'm so lost for you

You come crash into me
And I come into you
I come into you
In a boys dream
In a boys dream

Touch your lips just so I know
In your eyes, love, it glows so
I'm bare boned and crazy for you
When you come crash
into me, baby
And I come into you
In a boys dream
In a boys dream

If I've gone overboard
Then I'm begging you
to forgive me
in my haste
When I'm holding you so girl
close to me

Oh and you come crash
into me, baby
And I come into you
Hike up your skirt a little more
and show the world to me
Hike up your skirt a little more
and show your world to me
In a boys dream.. In a boys dream

Oh I watch you there
through the window
And I stare at you
You wear nothing but you
wear it so well
tied up and twisted
the way I'd like to be
For you, for me, come crash
into me
