The visitor

I have a pet door for my three cats and sometimes other animals use it to come in and eat their food. That's fine with me, even when it is a possum or squirrel.

Lately, though, we've had a cat visitor and he is undoubtedly the spunkiest and most obstinate cat I've ever seen.

At first he seemed very placid and it was only after he started causing trouble with my cats that I decided that he should be asked to leave.

Sounds easy enough, right? All you have to do is walk toward it and maybe stamp your feet or something. Not so. He stood his ground until I was nearly touching him and then only moved about an inch sideways rather than toward the door. I tried the usual, clapping, shooing, even pushing him with a large sheet of foam board.

He wasn't leaving. He attacked the foam board with vigor and lay on the floor allowing me to push him, then attacking again.

Light bulb! I turned on the vacuum and he was out the door like a shot. That worked three more times, then one day he refused to back down to the vacuum.

I got closer and closer with the hose and he stood there defiantly. I touched it to him and he didn't even blink. I sucked his whiskers into it and he didn't move. I sucked his tail into it and he attacked the hose but didn't go an inch closer to the door.

I was laughing so hard I could barely aim the hose and still he just stood there. He wasn't scared or angry or anything else. He was just determined. He was quite a sight with half of his cheek sucked into the vacuum hose, still standing there just looking at me serenely.

Needless to say, if he learns to get along with my cats he has a home with me. He is a beautiful calico and a great counterpoint to my gray and black cats.

WOW! That is one spunky feline. I think he deserves to come and live with you. Unless the cats get physical and try to attack each other, but they may adjust. I leave our door open onto our back screened in porch and my 3 cats go in and out. Lately, there are two stray males who have shown up and one of them comes in and out of the house. So far no fireworks, but we shall see. Mine are all girls, spayed of course. You can't have too many cats.

I laughed out loud reading your post! Thank you! I, too, hope Mr. Calico Cat is able to get along with your other ones so he can have a home there.
Our larger cat (think the older version of Garfield) has been with us for 5 years, and he still runs for cover when we turn on the vacuum - even when the lawn maintenance guys at our apartment complex use the leaf blowers outside. So Mr. Calico definitely has spunk and deserves a feeding bowl and a good home. :)

I just thought of a good name for him, "Purrsistance." You could call him "Purr" for short.

I really enjoyed all of your replies. Thank you! I hope he will be able to move in too. He is an amazing cat and it feels like he belongs here. Of course, he may belong to a neighbor so I may have to settle for visits.

He doesn't seem to want to fight my cats and he doesn't even give them the ears forward, "Nya na na na na na" look, but his mere presence causes them to fluff to twice their usual sizes. My smallest cat goes into a growling, hissing frenzy and won't let him go past her until I pick her up and tell her it's OK. I think he would sit placidly all day waiting for her to move out of his path but I can't stand the caterwauling! You would think somebody was standing on her tail the way she carries on.

Maybe they just don't think there is enough petting to go around if another cat joins the clan. Oddly enough, when the possum comes in for dinner they just sit and watch her eat.

Thank you, thank you for the cute story of this great cat. I think the name "Purrsistence" is purrfect! Hearing about this beauty brought about a much needed chuckle in the midst of great sadness.

I have a good friend who would like to hear about the opossum - she loves them. I'll let her know about your visitor.

Have a wonderful day!

that sounds like a great cat. I use an upright vacuum and Ditzie likes to sit on it and ride.
