Mini-Marathon

The Indy Mini-Marathon is two weeks from today. I am doing a ten mile training race tomorrow. I will continue regular training through this week. The week before the mini, I will taper my miles. I have continued lifting weights about 3-4 times a week through my training preparation. I am considering not lifting during the week prior to the mini to make sure that I am rested.
My race plan for the past few years has been to start out slow and save strength for the past two miles.

Your plan to continue doing a negative split and take a rest from lifting for the week prior to the mini is definitely the way to go. Good Luck!

I stood at the start with a race plan in mind and abandoned it immediately. I got mixed up behind some walkers and got irritated. I started running too hard. The first four miles were the fastest. The last six miles were consistent but slower. I get so emotional at the start of a race that I am inclined to take off too fast. It isn't like this is my first race. I have done at least 20 half marathons, one full marathon and loads of shorter distances. I usually do some kind of event every month.
I know that the last two miles of the mini can be very hard, especially if it is hot.

Do you train with a heart rate monitor or by time?
