looking for work in all the 'wrong' places!

Hi!

I just joined this group. I'm part of the 'over 50' generation. I moved to the Orlando, FL, area 2 years ago after my son, a deputy sheriff, was killed in the line of duty. My sister-in-law told me that jobs were a dime a dozen in FL! Boy! was she wrong. I have only been able to get occasional temp jobs. I've done everything I know to try to get a job--posted resume on numerous on line job banks, signed up with temp agencies, answered ads from newspapers & internet, etc....I tried networking with the few people I know in Central FL but only 2 people were willing to help me but that did not land me any jobs. My last job interview lasted all of 7 minutes--I know my age had something to do with it because the phone interview was so positive.

I have over 15 years experience as a tech editor, proposal (grant) coordinator, and proofreaderin addition to office management. But my 'skills' are my greatest asset--very organized and pay attention to detail--I 'see' the big picture in projects. That's what made me such a good prop coordinator. When I was the president of the local support group for families who had a law enforcement line of duty deaths, other survivors were very impressed with my ability to organize meetings, social events, newsletters, etc and my attention to detail.

I have to work since I have used all my savings during the last 2 years. I have no money to invest in any work at home job or training.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Turtlelady in Orlando

I lived in Altamonte Springs, Florida for over 20 years. I still have a condo there which I rent to my oldest daughter and her two roomies. My youngest attends Ringling School of Art in Sarasota.

I lost three jobs in 9 years in Orlando and after the last lay off in June 2007, I called it quits.

Florida is rough, the pay stinks and NOT ENOUGH JOBS. What did I do? I moved back to the San Francisco bay area. After a month I start a full time job Monday, April 14.

Good luck in Florida - you'll need it. Maybe you should move where Mickey and Minnie Mouse do not dictate salaries.

I feel the same way you do. It was never this hard to get work before. Even the dates on my resume give away my age. I have long period of time when I did not work because I raised my daughter and cared for my elderly parents. There is no employment credit for caring for family.

My part-time job ends on June 1st. I realize that most of the jobs posted are by agencies phishing for resumes (my opinion) and "fake jobs" which are really ads that get you emails to apply and sign up for school. That's probably what those "make money on your computer" jobs are . . . just a way to fill up the job boards with ads and make money if people sign up.

I have tried to interact with people to get local information. Some park jobs are low paying, but the employees seem happy, and at least they are busy and getting something.

The previous poster is right though, I heard about a teacher moving to California and really getting paid a much better salary than Florida.

Good Luck!

It sounds like you have excellent skills and as someone who established herself in the travel industry, I can tell you that many companies in the travel and hospitality industry would be more than happy to have someone with your qualifications. I would start with the theme parks and then look into hotels that are tied in with the parks, such as Swan and Dolphin at Disney.

Gosh, my husband and I have been considering a move down your way, but it sounds rough there economy wise and the taxes look pretty steep as well.

I am 62 and I had to work really hard to get a new position. I finally succeeded!
I have to keep telling myself that it is just for today and if I make enough I will save as much as I can toward retirement and/or layoffs.
It is never easy but I rely on my skills, maturity and faith.
Be patient. I tried a couple of different things and decided it was worth waiting for a position in my field (offce mgmt. and/or Executive administration).
I checked with the AARP folks, they have some interesting thoughts on employment at the 'boomer' age.
