Dark chocolate takes a wrong turn!
Last summer I was approached by a friend of a friend who had just discovered another wonderful company-this one featuring chocolate. Turned out it was a Multi-Level-Marketing(MLM) scheme and I don't do those. Then again, it was chocolate and I have a well known obession for CHOCOLATE for eons.
She convinced me to try just a box as a customer and the order arrived. So did the bill for around $260. I was furnious, called the owner in Nevada(all seem to be registered in Nevada or Utah) and asked if I could return it. I did and they were supposed to refund me-they did not of course. I did not stay on top of it and when I called, the company rebuffed me. When I realized I had not gotten the refund, I kept calling. Even though I never physically signed anything to become a salesperson/team member/etc she has signed me up over the phone without my persmission. I will not get my money back. Big fat chocolate scam!
I despise MLM marketing. It is not the wave of the future, it is snake oil repackaged. I lost friends over not selling the latest, greatest product that would for sure lenghten my hair, strengthen my skin, eyes, immune system or highlight my cheeks and brows. My former friend was mad that I would not use my efforts to assist her and I was amazed I had such a stupid friend. I am constantly approached because I am in sales and have many, many friends. Occaisonally, once every ten years, I attend a hosted dinner, lunch, meeting, etc. to find that indeed, I really hate this"sales" method. Funny, they all quote that Harvard Business School. They claim HBS calls direct selling the wave of the future. I heard it years ago and every vitamin, legal service and cosmetic company spouts the same dirty ditty diatribe. Please, please, please show me that quote!
So damn you chocolate lady. I didn't open the box, won't be buying chocolate in any form(good for the diet, hard on the soul) and will not speak to anyone in multi level marketing. I recently joined a local Chamber of Commerce and half the people are multi-level. Earnest people selling over priced, over hyped products and then they confide to you that the product really isn't important, it is the building a sales team/organization that is really crucial.
Oh please, I will run to other business venues that don't allow multi-level marketers into the fold. Seattle spawned a large business networking group that doesn't allow MLM members. Lack of these charltans is only one reason for their success but it is enough to keep me coming back.
Don't ever even think of approaching me with your patented products, life saving vitamins, wrinkle rollbacks or free one half facials. NO THANKS!
