why are you vegetarian or vegan?

Here are some of the common reasons people choose to be vegetarian or vegan today:
what were your reasons?,mine were Ahimsa and health when I first started, but now it covers all

Ahimsa (Non-Violence): The fact that people do not require meat to be healthy and vibrant means that the killing of animals can be seen as causing unnecessary suffering and harm in the world.

Animal Rights: Unfortunately, today's industrialized food factories view animals as commercial products to be capitalized for maximum profit, rather than as living creatures with needs and emotions. This leads to horrific and saddening treatment that most of us would prefer not to acknowledge, but that is sadly real and pervasive.

Environmental Concerns: There are a few primary ecological concerns... The first involves the fact that it takes a phenomenally disporportionate amount of water, grain, energy, fuel, and resources to create 1 cow worth of meat (or pork, or chicken, etc). If reallocated, these resources could reach and nourish many human lives. Another aspect is that the meat and dairy industries create a stunning amount of damaging waste every day: tons of pig manure, off-flow full of hormones that alters the biology of fish for miles downstream, deforestation to create land for grazing... and so on.

Health: Scientists, nutritionists, and doctors are increasingly recommending a plant-based diet to maintain optimal health. Eating a diet rich in fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts, and oils can lead to a healthy heart, healthy cholesterol levels, high energy levels, and many more benefits.

For me its all of the above. When i was a child i did not like to eat meat once i realized that it was really a dead animal. Back then my parents ran my life. lol
When the light went on in my head that i didn't have to eat meat any more i immediately became a vegetarian. I think being a meat eater is ingrained in our upbringing and its a hard bad habit to break for most people.
I try doing vegan and now raw foods. I do alright for so long and then i will have some ice cream or yogurt. My daughter had an Easter brunch and i hadn't had eggs for ages. I become pretty ill from eating them. They are definately off my list as far as food goes. I can still eat them when they are put into batters, etc. Just not by themselves.
I love being a vegetarian and i love the options of going vegan or raw to enhance my meals.
Great question, thanks for posting it
hugs, Valerie

I do not understand, after viewing the truth on the farm factories. I don't think any person with an once of conscience, can eat meats.

I don't think I can add anything to what you've provided. Very good post! As I grow older, vegetarianism seems like the moral and ethical way to conduct my life. I also find it spiritual since it touches on preservation of life and the respect of animals.
