Drive Thru Mastectomies

I am steamed!! In the Chicago Tribune there was an article that sted women should go home the same day they have a mastectomy. Never mind the tubes, the pain, the stitches and thnausea from the anesthetic. Two male Oncologists said women do better at home then spending a night or two in an unfamiliar hospital. Well, I have news for them. I was in the hospital four days for the first mastectomy and two for the second. I would never have been able to take care of myself at home the first couple of days. Come on guys, wake up!! This is a male run society, and it is what it is. Would you want to go home the same day after have your testicles removed? Give us a break!! Or better yet, would you want your wife, mother or daughter to come home right after having her breast removed?

There would have been a cure for cramps decades ago if men had periods...

I think insurance companies add to that problem, they don't want to pay to keep you hospitalized any longer than THEY can get away with it.

Nan is right, if men had the problems women have they would have cured ALL of those ills already.

I understand your concern with coming home immediately and think the insurance companies are having a lot to do with this.

I was hospitalized for 3 days, and felt I should have been there a bit longer because at the time I lived alone. However, my doctor was worried about infections ... and said the longer I was hospitalized the more danger of infection setting in.

For me, three days would be an absolute minimum.

You can blame the insurance companies for this fiasco.

My niece just had a mastectomy on Friday. They tried to send her home same day, throwing up too. She lives 1 1/2 hours away from the hospital on winding then lumpy dirt roads. Can't imagine the pain trying to get home. The drs and nurses keep telling her it doesn't hurt, BULL! Linj

I suspect that the doctors must get some kind of kick-back from the insurance companies for the number of people they can get out of the hospital quickly.
But, cheer up, things will get much worse if the government takes over healthcare. :o(

You know when men have operations that get to stay forever if they want.

The doctors are obviously trying to make it appear as if they are concerned for a woman's well-being when they say she would feel better being at home. She would also feel better not having to go through a mastectomy, but that is not possible for her and a hospital is a better place to be than at home, as you so astutely pointed out. My mother had a mastectomy when she was in her late 70s; I really doubt we could have taken good care of her had she been made to come home too early after that surgery. Sometimes I think doctors are brain-dead in some areas. Like this one. And it is true, if this were some kind of radical surgery on a male, they would never have opened their mouths.
