TGIF girl..it's Friday..way too much to think about..LOL You sound like you are contimplating getting a job or part-time...and yes I would miss my pc..have a good weekend..
I'm at home and have the PC and the lap top on at times depending upon where I am in the house. Yes, I miss the computer and my on-line friends when I am away. I learned to use the computer as we had them in our classrooms. Then we became a lap top school. The fourth - sixth graders all had their own, so we were given all sorts of training which, of course, is now out of date.
Who is at work when on eons? I can't get onto Eons at work. Our network blocks it. Who is in their home office? No home office here; my computer is in my bedroom.
In what room is your computer? I just answered that one. Are you using a desktop PC, a laptop, a MAC ? I'm using a PC but my next computer purchase will definitely be a MAC How old is your computer? It's about a year old which makes it a dinosaur in computer years
How did we ever manage without computers? I can't imagine my life without one now. If my internet service goes down I lose my mind! When did you first see, learn to use and use one proficiently? I bought my boys a computer called "Adam" when they were both small and they're 30 and 35 now. It didn't connect to the internet and all it was really good for was some minor word processing and playing games. It had one of those daisy wheel printers. Remember those? The first serious computer I came into contact with was at the company where I still work. We had dumb terminals all over the place which were connected to a mainframe the size of a small warehouse someplace in the same building. But one day they brought in a PC and put it right in the middle of our department. There was one girl who used it to run reports for about an hour a day and otherwise it was untouched. I asked my boss if she minded if I spent some time "playing" with it either before or after work. She gave permission so I went out and bought a book...I think it was Windows 3.1?...and started playing around with it the next day. Within six months we had PC's on everyone's desk and all those people who were afraid to touch the first one were jealous that I knew at least a thing or two about them.
Does your job require you have computer skills? Yes...every minute that I'm at work.
Is your microwave as valuable to you as your computer? No.
Do you ever feel like your computer has a mind of its own..almost human? Yes, and the bitch quite often tries to get the better of me but then we have those three words that get her right back into line...control...alt...delete. Do you talk to your computer? I talk about her all the time.
Are you on your computer every day? Yes Is it like a friend to you? Yes...and she also connects me to many of my friends. Would you be lonely without it? Yes, definitely
Who is at work when on eons? - yes and if I'm not there, I'm..... Who is in their home office? - yes
In what room is your computer? - living room & spare bedroom Are you using a desktop PC- yes, a laptop - want one a MAC ? - no How old is your computer? - one's 2 yrs old & the other's 6 yrs old
How did we ever manage without computers? - can't imagine being without one When did you first see, learn to use and use one proficiently? - pre- Commodore 64 days back in the early 1980's; first REAL computer was a Unix based machine that took 15 minutes to boot up; I've had several PCs since the divorce and know more about online use then my ex who has a master degree in electircal engineering-computer controls....now I do an occasional commercial web page & computer graphics but all self taught
Does your job require you have computer skills? - absolutely; used to do accounting software conversions, also self taught....Quickbooks & Peachtree and have learned a bit about Banner, Timberline & SAP
Is your microwave as valuable to you as your computer? hell no.....but then I would be lost without some other small kitchen appliances like my grill/panini press/griddle, toaster oven & rotisserie....but I like to cook
Do you ever feel like your computer has a mind of its own..almost human? Do you talk to your computer? nope but I occasionally swear at it
Are you on your computer every day? Is it like a friend to you? Would you be lonely without it? daily, hourly & by the minute; no, not a friend but a way to keep in contact with friends; I used to have serious withdrawal symptoms when I was away from it but I've broken the addiction
My computer is in my living room where I access Eons. Believe it or not, I don't have Internet access at work. IT or someone seems to think that my grade level doesn't require Internet. Of course, we think if we don't, some others don't either, but that's another story :D Basic computer skills are required in my job, but even my supervisors call me when they need help on something. It seems like I've been using computers all my life, but it's only been about 15 years now. It's amazing to me to think of the years of my life I spent without a computer - not even knowing they existed and never thinking they would one day be an invaluable part of my life.
I have a working desktop, two that are possibly working, and two laptops - no MAC in the bunch. The one I'm using is about four, maybe five years old. I'll be upgrading probably this summer or at Christmas - a birthday or Christmas gift to myself. Would I be lonely without my computer? No. Would I miss it? Yeah, I would, but I'd survive...I think. Don't ask me to choose between my TV and my computer. It would be like a mother choosing between her kids.
If I had to do without a computer or microwave, I'd choose the microwave. I'm on the computer at least once a day, and when at work, for twelve hours at a stretch. At home, if I'm awake the computer, like my TV, is on. I might not be paying attention to it, but it's on.
I think all current technology has built in AI. I try to be nice and say only sweet things to all my appliances, but sometimes...and that's when it talks back by shutting down or something. I *know* it's smarter than I am. I think computers are just waiting to take over the world.
>Who is at work when on eons? Who is in their home office? What's this work thing, do I need to have it delived as an extra with my 'TV, phone, cell, net, news paper, junk food, take out the trash price for life package? Can't get that one in my ares.
>In what room is your computer? Are you using a desktop PC, a laptop, a MAC? All the above!
>How old is your computer? Really old, last weeks technolagy!
>How did we ever manage without computers? When did you >first see, learn to use and use one proficiently? See one 1968. Learn how to use? Thats against Gates & copany rules. The rules clearly state that the computer wii use you. And who is this person that is managing with one.
>Does your job require you have computer skills? There you go talking about that 'Job' thing again.
>Is your microwave as valuable to you as your computer? Had them combined in to one unit , saves carpetware and can maxium daily radeation needs from one source.
>Do you ever feel like your computer has a mind of its >own..almost human? Do you talk to your computer? Shush! It might hear you. You don't know the trouble I had the last time it thought some one was talking about it. Mine actuall plays the 'My name is HAL" thing from 2001 when it boot up. (Really it does, I hate the Windows bell & dings. And Bogart says "It's been an experience when I shut down,) No I don't talk to it, it's a teenage and wuold't listen any way.
>Are you on your computer every day? Is it like a friend to >you? Would you be lonely without it? It uses me every day. I tell it, it's my friend so it doesn't back stab me. There's better things that I feel lonely with out, but I don't let it know or that "HAL" thing comes out again!
It's a funny thing but they expect me to work, when I'm at work. Just to be sure they block access to sites like Eons. Next thing you know they'll want me to be on time too.
At work I use a PC at home I'm in my bedroom on a Mac. The Mac is about four years old but because it's a Mac the updates don't trash the machine so I'll be able to use this machine another couple of years until I can't ignore all of the newer bells and whistles.
How did we manage? Typewriters, carbon paper, mimeo machines, erasers, erasable bond paper, retypes, retypes, retypes, and xxxxxxx overstrikes. I was lucky and recognized the potential early on. I became proficient in the late eighties when I convinced management to computerize the Texas newsroom where I worked. Since I was about the only one that knew how to power up the machines they made me Sysop and I've never looked back.
I now work in a projects department where I design and build web pages, graphics and administer content of all sorts from emails to complete sites. I couldn't do all the jobs I do if it weren't for the damn computer.
The truth is my computer is far and away more valuable then the microwave. I can cook, but please don't send me back to the typewriter.
I swear at the computer, more the one at work than the one at home. PC's have a number of quirks that force you to learn patience. PC are why I wear my hair so short. I can't get a hold of it to pull it out anymore.
I don't think of the computer as a friend but I am addicted. I work on one for eight hours a day except for coffee breaks and debates with coworkers. It is not unusual for me to power up my home computer while I'm changing from my work clothes. I spend too much time on this thing, and when I travel I can hardly sleep because I haven't check my email one more time before going to bed. It's a sad existence.
I hope you are really just curious and not casing my place to find out what kind of compute I have and when I'll be away. In any case there are your answers.
