Nothingness and Somethingness

I was reading an article about how the universe started from nothing. Blackness. Starting with the big bang, and probably ending, so the scientific theories go, back into nothing. We ourselves started from nothing and became something, and will go back to nothing again. So far, so depressing.

OK, so we have all this nothingness, and then: the true mystery. That there is something from all this nothingness. Empires, galaxies, love affairs, languages, people, and they all come and go, leaving behind not a trace. Actually, there is a lot of comfort in this – whatever we mess up, is erased and forgotten. In the long run, nobody knows or cares. Time heals, then forgives and finally forgets, forgets all. Time gently eases away all pain and joy.

But here's the beauty part. The successes in life get erased, as well as the failures. Think of it! Think of the burden of having to exceed your success every day. A cosmic game of 'Can You Top This?' or what we used to call 'Oh, Yeah? Think That's Something?' It is easier to overcome failure than to overcome the limiting forces of success.

Quantum mechanics shows that every point in a vacuum possesses an infinite amount of energy, unmanifested, unformed energy.
So if we need energy in our lives or thoughts, we just need to go to that null place in ourselves, where we will find an infinite amount of energy. Isn't that a wonderful thought?

OK, so this is the kind of stuff I have been reading lately.

Hi Marti,
I hope you keep reading more and sharing your thoughts about what you're reading !
One approach to helping us to put our "problems" into perspective is to question whether anyone will be likely to care anything about it in another hundred years. More than likely they won't, so whatever that "HUGE" problem seems to be, it isn't so important after all when given a broader perspective.
I don't know much about quantum mechanics or quantum physics so I enjoy your posts which help to enlighten me (and others I would imagine).
I like the idea of finding an infinite source of energy. Acupuncture seems to be able to tap that same infinite source and convert the etherial energy into a form that is usable by the body. Learning to tap into that energy in other ways and for other reasons is an exciting concept.

This only proves that the most important goal of life is to stay in the "present" moment. If you concentrate only on the present, then what was done in the past means nothing and there is no need to worry about the future because your mind and body is focus on the present.

I do feel different about the beginnings of the universe. I do not believe in nothingness, but that the universe was a mass of energy that exploded and the energy became matter. When the universe reverse it will collapse back to energy.

I dont believe in nothingness either. I do know that all we have is today....that we are not guaranteed tomorrow. Having done genealogy though, dont believe your mistakes will be forgotten haha.....and anyway its all recorded in that very big book of your life by some angel or other, now theres a job and a half. Hope that mine if kind to me and writes with a positive slant and is fair if he is in a bad mood haha.

Are we talking about the Big Bang or the Jell-O Bubble theory?

Deep reading. I thought you were on vacation? I would like to argue your first two paragraphs, particularly the comments---"back to nothing", and "leaving behind not a trace".

My mother died a few years ago and there is hardly a day that goes by that I do not think about her---her smile, her kindness, the things she taught me, etc. Paul, a close friend died a few years ago and I still remember him fondly---his easy going nature, his way of welcoming you to his home, his generosity. My closest childhood friend died about thirty years ago. I still remember his birthdate and think of him on his special day. I remember the hours that we spent together fighting imaginary foes.

My point is that we do not just become nothing. This is not intended to be religious but for those we leave behind, we were indeed something---not just reeds blowing in the wind. And, our spirit lives on through our friends and all of the people whose lives we have touched. I imagine that the same energy that this planet gives off will live again somewhere in the universe.

There is a saying that if your standing with one leg in the past and the other in the future, your pissing all over the present.
Two extremes that do not share the same space are past and future. But both share the present. I'm still looking for that null space in my present. I need the energy.

Yes, but Quest, what happens after YOU die? You say that your mother lives on in you. But when you are gone, then she is gone.

And Charles, I think you have put your finger on the problem...finding that null place within ourselves so we can tap into the infinite energy.

I suspect that is what meditation is for.

"So if we need energy in our lives or thoughts, we just need to go to that null place in ourselves, where we will find an infinite amount of energy."

Marti,

This reminds me of a passage from the book, Blessings of the Cosmos wherein Neil Douglas-Klotz provides other possible translations of Jesus' sayings. Please bear with me. I believe you will enjoy this. Douglas-Klotz translates directly from Aramaic into English. Aramaic is a richly layered and textured language. Anyway, for "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you" he offers a translation which is, in part:

"Create enough space within
to receive the force you release;
hollow yourself -
purified of hidden hopes and fears,
and it shall be opened easily -
a natural response to space created,
part of the contraction-expansion
of the universe;
and penetrated smoothly -
as the cosmos opens and closes
around your words of satisfied desire."

Marti, what is it you are reading? Can you tell us the titles and authors? (And, please, I hope it isn't Frijhof Capra.)
