Too Sexy? Opinions, please!

sexy
• • Victoria's Secret, the lingerie company that introduced the Very Sexy bra, the Fantasy Bra, and the Internet server-crashing fashion show, has become "too sexy" for its own good, its top executive said.
• • "We've gotten away from our heritage — — too sexy, and we use the word sexy a lot and really have forgotten the ultra feminine," said Sharen Turney, Victoria's Secret's chief executive, in a call with industry analysts.
• • Sharen Turney said Victoria's Secret wants to increase its sophistication. Read — view link

That graphic is too hilarious!

I think that Victoria's Secret and many retailers are going to feel the crunch that the mortgage crisis has caused, the ripple effect.

Granted, V.S. may have outraged many far-right fundamentalist Christians, and Dr. Laura, but I'm not so sure that their distate for V. S.'s ads and store windows have much to do with the slip in business.

Something else that I noticed, other stores, such as Target, Kohls, Macy's and so forth have expanded their lingerie sections, filling them full of V. S. knock-offs at much lower prices.

• • Yes, I agree. Years ago in Manhattan there were many greeting card stores, independent Mom & Pop shops where people bought birthday cards, etc. Almost all these card stores are gone; the few that survive also sell lottery tickets, funny party costumes, helium balloon bouquets, and they also rent mailboxes.
• • YES! As LUV2rite pointed out, now if you want to buy lingerie, there are many options not just Victoria's Secret. The ripple effect has affected the NIPPLE effect, if you will.
• • And you can also shop online for sexy under-things.
• • One very creative former actress in Manhattan has a panty-of-the-month club that has made her a rich woman. She goes to corporate offices once a month — — with beauties who model the panties in person to high-earning executives. She makes a nice living doing that!
• • In France, sexy is often sophisticated. Sexy is not the same as "sophisticated" in the USA [though it used to be].

I think the chief executive at VS may be on to something. If a woman feels feminine & appealing, it can be enough. Being sexy will come naturally. Whether she wears a brushed cotton lace gown or a thong teddy.

Why should being sexy be incompatible with sophistication? Being slutty is incompatible, I would think. Being sexy is part of self-confidence which comes with sophistication.

I am recently in love with Gabriel Byrne on In Treatment on HBO. Every night at 9:30, I stop what I'm doing to watch him and find him sophisticated, intelligent, and smoldering with passion for life and people, which to me translates into SEXYYYYYY!

I agree with crestofwaves. "Sexy" is not incompatible with being sophisticated. Now "too sexy" when it verges on slutty would be.

Clothes should become the woman and be in keeping with her station in life, her age, etc. Many sexy woman are fully clothed. Sexiness is not how one looks but how one acts. I see a lot of women who think they are looking sexy in "sexy" clothes. But they just look cheap, trampy, trashy.

As for underwear, if you are not showing it to the public, you can have the sexiest kind on (or none at all) and feel sexy without sacrificing your sophistication. If you feel sexy, you will be sexy and won't have to appear sexy through clothing.

Victoria's Secret has become more slutty than sexy.

Sensual & Savvy(Chic;) R better suited, to their image. We need to remember that from a marketing perspective "PERCEPTIONS BECOME REALITY" That said the word "SEXY" isn't always aligned with an elegant or femminine woman. Thus the statement by the perceptive CEO is such that they allowed the denegration of their own brand and both diluted the message & sent out a wrong signal; confusing the primary market; to whom they created the brand for.

Sexy is better aligned with Frederick's of Holywood.

Too Sexy? that's ridiculous - this culture should stop being so puritan - this is the 21st century - sexy is fun - there are all these extremely violent vidio games & movies that all kinds of people play or watch - yet showing some particully nude women in lacey undergarments is a major issue - if owned VS i would continue with the sexy trend !!

I agree with those who identified the line between sexy and slutty. However, I'd like to add another word to the discussion, provocative. I've been a customer at VS. The items I am drawn to are those I find provocative to me for my partner. Fortunately, for me, my respective partners also found the items pleasant to wear. It's no fun to have a woman wear something she doesn't feel comfortable wearing.
