That's weird. I've never felt alone. Guess it's because I have so many dimensions wanting to be heard... So many ansestors, so many rock spirits, so many wood nymphs, so many cloud talkers, sometimes I send them all away... just so I can get some peace and quiet. tee hee
Native american people don't discourage our children from their invisible friends unless they are trying to be refrigerator people. ..or pass as refrigerator peoples. tee hee
Solitude is certainly the base experiance of the profound. All our instintive, perceived needs to create appearances fall away - and honesty forces itself into our awareness.
But Man being the only being which knows it is alone? Dunno about that one. Strikes me as too bold a statement to make about the unknowable.
I believe that to be true.
I came into the world alone when I was born.
I assuredly will be alone when I die.
Whether I existed in some way prior to my birth, I don't know, nor do I have knowledge of an existence after my death.
And the contemplation of my unique aloneness elevates my feeling of the dignity of my existence a bit above the recognition that I am one of billions.
peskey, you're back.
You can't come in the world alone. You're mother had to be there even if just for a little while. That is not alone.
Loniliness is different than solitude.
One thing that I have learned about animals is they want to be with like animals. So whether that is solitude or loniliness I do not know.
I think of solitude as more of a choice and loniliness more of a condition.
Marti, I always enjoy your posts whether I understand them or not! I keep hoping that if I hang out with the smart kids some of it will rub off via osmosis!
Nan, you have to explain what a refrigerator person is. Inquiring minds and all that...
Hi Marti,
I agree that I don't quite understand the comment about the "refrigerator people"... and I'm also an enquiring mind.
I do agree with nan about solitude being inconcievable in a world which surrounds us with life, vitality, and abundance. The rocks themselves have a spirit of steadfast companionship. Also the Earth herself, the oceans, rivers, trees, birds, insects, and all life are intimitly linked to us in this plane of existence.
I'm not sure who Octavio Paz is or was, but I don't think I agree with him about this one.
If he's talking about loneliness, there are many examples of animals who have grieved and morned the absence of those they had loved.
I don't agree with the premise that man IS alone in the first place.
RD
There are many animals, insects ect that travel alone instead of in a group. Humans have the ability to choose when they want to be alone and when they want to be with other humans. Since we are a species that is able to think and reason, aloneness may be necessary so we can have time to put order into our lives and map out a plan for the future. The need for thinking is also the reason why so many thangs have been invented and why humans have made so many manufactory and technical advances in the last 150 years.
Personally, I prefer to be along to put my mind back into a peaceful state of being. My life is full of gadgets that could take up every waking minute (T.V, computer, movies) but I need that moment where there is no sound but the thoughts in my mind.
A couple of my picks for 'most interesting' here: Marti, another thought provoking post and RD, You wrote what I was thinking except probably in a more suscinct manner !
Further ..... now that I have your attention, I'd like to add that this is not the first time this has happened. More often than not my thoughts have been expressed on Deeper Thinkers while I'm still formulating an appropriate response. Thus, many of my responses are an attempt at humour. Just to be involved. Thanks again folks ! You're a great bunch and one of the main reasons I stick around Eons !
