Christian?

As a new member, I thought I would start by identifying the writing that most influeced my religious thought. It was "Why I am not a Christian" by Bertrand Russell. Has anyone else here read it?

I refer to it regularly in my intercourse with atheists and academic agnostics. For all of his intellect he failed miserably in the fact that he denied the historical existence of Jesus of Nazareth! Which no reputable scholar Christian or otherwise would entertain as being true.

Of course I don't agree, BIGEDVOI, but I am nevertheless curious. In what way do you think that the actual, historical existence of Jesus logically proves Christian theology? Does the existence of Mohammed prove the theology of Islam? Or Buddha the theology of Buddhism? How about L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology? (Well, that might be a little far out.) Don't get me wrong. There is much I have liked about religion. In the words of one of my favorite authors, the late Phil Craig, "Religions have inspired so much great art, architecture and music that it's almost enough to make you a believer."

It does not prove as you say “Christian theology” it mearly eliminates the fact that there are those morons who say that he never existed.
And while the others you list may appear to be in the same class as Jesus of Nazereth not one of them ever claimed to be God. Only Jesus did and you have ony two choices either accept that fact or reject it!
As for religion Jesus hated it more than he hated the fact that man had forgotten to have a realtionship with God that was His reason for coming to reestablih that direct realtionship with Him. It was religion that crucified Him!
No one man has inspired more art, more literature, more music, and more thought combined than Jesus Christ. In the Encyclopidia Britannica Julius Caesar, Muhhamed, Buddah, Confutze, Napolian Bonaparte, Alexander the Great, and with the combined Presidents of the US don’t get as much space as Jesus of Nazareth! He is the central figure of civilization and for good reason!

Well, BIGEDVOI, it seems that this group is your show, and that's OK. It is not quite what I expected it to be, but that's not the first time either. We would never agree on many issues, so I will end by saying Peace Be With You.

I have the book but I've not read it yet.
I guess you can inspire me to stop procrastinating and read it soon.
I'm not a Christian--although I once described myself as such. Many things altered my beliefs causing me to renounce Christianity as my personal religion.
I always say that "organized religion is against my religion." I do, however, have a strong belief in who I call God.
I read the Conversations with God trilogy by Neale Donald Walsch and these teachings are more what my soul feels are right for me.
I'm interested in hearing your comments on Why I'm Not a Christian and I think I'm feeling an urge to start reading it.
