Mary Quant's Birthday

60's Fashion Designer

Quant turned the fashion world upside-down with her outrageous styles. She is credited with creating both the mod look of the 1960s, with its futuristic-looking vinyl clothing and bold geometric designs, and the miniskirt. To complete the look with smoky eyes and pale lips, Quant introduced her own line of cosmetics. In 1966 Quant was awarded the Order of the British Empire, a medal of achievement given by the queen, for her contribution to fashion. She received this honor wearing a miniskirt.

i was so completely into fashion (as were most of us). i had the twiggy eyes, the white lipstick, the very, very minis(in fact i have a story about that...save for spring break).

i did the whole cher bell bottoms with poor boy tops and huge plastic earrings and sandals. then the mini skirts with matching tights/fishnets and shoes. started to paint my face with flowers to match the outfits. black light clothes.the newsboy hats, the vests and men's ties. then on to the long skirts and flowing dresses. ponchos. bells around my ankles. ripped jeans. leather belts, hats and handmade sandals. cut-off jeans with bikini tops. homemade purses made out of carpet. vintage clothes. macrame tops. see-thru tops. low-slung skirts. tie-dye. batik. bras were out.
then it was leotard tops and silk pants and huge shoes. jeans with heels and blouses and jackets. cut off sweatshirts. tight dresses. jumpsuits. big hair. satin pant outfits. what else?

okay....geez...back to work.

Matching shorts under the mini-dress. I needed this for drinking at a water fountain, sitting, climbing stairs, etc!
