Grey Gardens -- The Movie

It’s been a documentary with a cult following. Also, Little Edith inspired fashion designers everywhere. It was a Broadway musical. Now, Grey Gardens is being filmed for fall 2008 release.

The cast includes: Drew Barrymore (‘Little’ Edith Bouvier Beale); Jessica Lange (‘Big’ Edith Bouvier Beale); Jeanne Tripplehorn (Jackie Kennedy Onassis); Daniel Baldwin (Julius Krug); and Ken Howard (Phelan Beale).

__________
-- Did you see the original documentary or Broadway musical?
-- What do the Beales say about eccentrics, declining wealth, and mental illness?
-- Are you looking forward to the movie?

I've heard about this & seen just bits of the documentary. I do want to see the film. I'm sure that Drew Barrymore will be excellant. Jessica Lange also. There was a once well to do family that lived similar to this near a town I lived in years ago.

• • Albert and David Maysles invited me to see their documentary at a private screening in 1975 - - and "little" EDIE was there to meet us and answer questions. It was very interesting to talk to EDIE, who was both congenial and haughty.
• • The private screening was held at a NYU building. Yes, EDIE wore one of her famous head scarves.
• • I didn't see the Broadway play but I do think it was a brilliant shift of the dramatist: to position the backstory in ACT I and show how "big" EDIE was once a glamourous debutante in the Hamptons. The play starred the always mesmerizing Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson.
• • I do think the claim that EDIE inspired fashionistas is inflated.
• • See the movie? The actress could be completely inferior in her portrayal - - unless they got a REAL actress such as Christine Ebersole. A movie star is not a real actress.
A stage-trained actress is a real actress.
• • I'm sure Albert Maysles is delighted by all this. [David died years ago.]

I'm jealous. What a memory for your collection. I would have loved to meet her. I loved her independence, eccentricity, and courage to face their world with pride.

The documentary was hard for me to watch. I wanted to rescue them and was angry that the relatives didn't help more with the house. However, having dealt with some eccentric, independent relatives -- I understand that you can only do so much without their permission.

The musical was heartwarming and heartbreaking.

I think the movie will be fine with Drew and Jessica. Goodness, both are gifted actresses. However, I agree that stage-trained actresses ARE the best.

• • When Albert and David Maysles invited me to see their documentary at a private screening in 1975, and "little" EDIE was there to answer questions, it was all very interesting.
• • We knew, of course, she would be there. Mr. Maysles spoke first - - about shooting the footage - - and introduced Edie. As she walked to the stage, she was a bit astonished to hear such a thunderous ovation.
• • She was dressed all in black, with a black shawl coiled around her waist, and a black kerchief on her head like bad topiary.
• • Someone asked EDIE if she had done any acting before.
• • EDIE drew herself up as if she had been asked if she eats RATS. In a haughty, proper way, EDIE said, "Well, no. And I am not job-hunting or anything! When I was younger, I did some modeling - - you know, the charity fashion shows." In other words, the debutante wanted the wage slaves in the auditorium to know that the blue-blooded Beales did not ever belong to the world of commerce.
• • Witnessing things live - - watching live people onstage - - nothing like it. My friends went out for coffee after, and we discussed it and discussed it for quite awhile after.
