Words that lose their meaning....

Now this pisses me off. Some words are so overused that they basically have no meaning. My first pick is 'hero'. The term used to really mean something; somebody who dragged an old lady from a burning building; somebody who jumped in front of a speeding car to get a child out of danger; now, those are heroes. But today I heard something about all the people killed in the 911 attack, and the commentator called them all heroes. Nope. The police and fire fighters? Yup. The rest? Wrong place; wrong time.

My second pick is 'cyber-bully'. This used to mean a psychotic person who, for one reason or another, stalks you around the Internet attacking you; writes blogs full of lies about you to embarrass you; gets your email address and harasses you relentlessly with unwanted and nasty emails; puts up a MySpace page defaming you. Now that's a cyber-bully.

But here on eons a cyber-bully is anyone who doesn't agree with you and argues with you. If this horrible person has others who agree with him and express their opinions, then they are the cyber-bully's 'gang'. When did this word get demoted to this silliness? I have read stories of teenage girls who have been stalked and had their characters absolutely assassinated by other vicious teenage girls, girls who put up those MySpace pages making derogatory and untrue statements about them. Calling them on their cell phones leaving nasty and vulgar messages. That's cyber-bullying (at least according to Wikipedia.)

And finally, Nazi. This word was just about the worst thing you could call anybody. If somebody called you a Nazi, that meant you were a horrible, vicious person with no conscience. Today? Nope. It could be somebody who picks on other people because of their grammar and spelling, the 'grammar Nazi'. In Manhattan there's even a 'soup Nazi'.

I realize that language is a 'living thing' and is constantly evolving, but I hate it when powerful words lose all their power.

Wow, what a great post Michibilly! I see you use Wikipedia. Have you heard of Godwin's Law. You can read about it here: view link

Words may be evolving, but humans are going backwards! Your post put out there some things that are going on that make me wonder if humans will ever truly get it together.

Mich, I'm happy to see you got that off your chest.
I dont care if you used Wikipedia or Smack-apedia
your right on all points.

I take my hat off to you for taking the time to clear
up the subject Cyber Bullying, it's become evident to
the majority there's quite a lot of Cyber Bullying within
our EONS Community, and not just in our Group. I see
it in other Groups too:

I dont claim to be a expert, not by any means,
but I can and will say this to the Bullies who are
constantly Bullying other Members.

You're certainly not Perfect by
any means of ones imagination.

The way I view it is; you people are nothing
more then Control Freaks, yes precisely so.

Finally, let me add,

this aint burger king

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!! Lets add bigot and racist to the list! It is nothing more than justified name calling! If I called some one a f--king azzhole, I would get into trouble, but if I called somebody a racist bigot, that's acceptable! Racist, bigot, cyberbully, and nazi are nasty names and should never be used unless justified! A difference of opinion isn't justification!

What if that person really is a racist bigot? They do still exist and probably will for several more generations to come. Some current examples are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

I have to agree with you on this topic. It appears that by minimalizing words in our society we allow the true meaning to still be there, just candy coated or even worse ,demeaned to the point of being justified.Look how "curse words" are being used today as adjectives, now that pisses me off.

Well - thank God this is still America - while some may piss and moan about how we are going to hell in a handbasket we are one of a few places where we can pretty much say what we want. Would you rather be able to control what words are forbidden - and who makes that list and then what's next ?
God Bless America including a lot of A**Holes who live in it.
George Carlin wasn't too far off !

smartypanz, I have no idea how you were able to interpret this post into something against free speech, because it doesn't say that at all. It's about how strong words, sometimes 'hate' words, are so overused that they lose the power of their meaning.
