WOW... I had heard that Canada's Health system isnt all thats it cracked up to be and that just shows you what happens.. Even tho our system is far from great..I still dont want Socialized medicine...
WOW. Viva Mexico! They have fantastic medical facilities here and none of that nonsense! A friend of mine here fell and broke her back; the ambulance took her to the best hospital in Ensenada (for foreigners, they ask you which hospital you want when they come and get you). She got complete care, a private room, back brace, etc., etc., all that she needed and paid the $400 hospital bill with her credit card. Can't beat it.
I think this a problem in most national health care systems. The UK also has a long waiting list, even for serious conditions such as Cancer.
I don't think there is any easy way to wait to die. Being a Cancer survivior I really feel for these people. Every hour counts in getting treatment early.

I have to wonder which I would rather do --- Be on a waiting list or have no hope of getting medical care because I have no insurance and cannot afford it.
To bad we couldn't come up with a good National Health plan, learn which ones work and "copy" that one not just focus on Canadas health plan. They are only one country of many that have national health care and it works in most places. Sure is better than NO health care and NO hope for so many.

I lived in the UK for 10 years until recently, so have had some experience of the NHS over there.
It's not so great if you've got the flu or something minor like that - you may find yourself waiting days or weeks to see a doctor. They have new 'walk-in' centers which allow you to see registered nurses who can give (not prescribe - give) you antibiotics and similar treatments for common ailments. They have doctors on staff to deal with more serious issues.
I broke my arm once. I was patched up within the hour. On a separate occasion I had severe gastroenteritis and was very dehydrated and sick generally. Got myself to the emergency department and within 5 minutes of walking in the door I was in a bed with an IV and having various drugs administered and tests done.
No charge for any of the above. They ask for your name and address and that's it.
Close friend of mine had headaches and neck pain and vomiting and so on. Took himself to emergency at 3am, and he got CAT scans and MRIs and whatever else immediately, and they discovered a small tumor in his brain. Checked straight in to the hospital, 2 or 3 days later he had 9 hours of surgery by the world's expert in that condition, and spent 2 weeks recovering in hospital, being cared for by some truly excellent staff (I wasn't working at the time, and so got a good view of all of this as I was at the hospital for all of the allowed visiting hours).
His bill for all of the above unscheduled surgery, tests, care and medications that went with it?
₤0.00
...actually, that's a lie. They don't give you a bill.

Jamie, thanks for the much brighter view. I hope that your government whenever or whatever it decides insofar as health care solicits input from a place like the UK.
