A Little Bit of Ogden

Friends, I am not going to go overboard with this Moderator thing. After all, Everything In Moderation should probably include--moderation! But PJ's request for interesting and/or little-known facts about Poets seems to me like a good kickstart. And one of my favorite poets is Ogden Nash.

To me the #1 interesting fact about him is where he was born. Ogden Nash, Jokester in Verse, unabashed punster, the very DEFINITION of Wry, was born . . . in Rye, New York.

He was long credited with the authorship of "The World's Shortest Poem." Its alternate titles are "On the Antiquity of Microbes" and "Fleas." Here's the poem:

Adam
Had 'em.

They are pretty sure Mr. Nash did NOT write that, but it sounds like him. After all, he did write "Candy is dandy/But liquor is quicker" and "Parsley is gharsley."

His real first name was not Ogden, but either Frederic or Frederick, depending on who you ask.

You can visit his virtual grave and leave a note and/or image:

There you will also find a short biographical sketch.

I miss Mr. Nash mightily!

Thanks for the link & congrats!
I think profiles like this will at least expand my awareness
of different poets.
Are his poems part of the "public domain?"

Thanks claybo! He was a favorite! Every man’s common sense poet. Fo those who might be interested, some further notes on Nash:
Nash was best known for surprising, pun-like rhymes, sometimes with words deliberately misspelled for comic effect. He often wrote in an exaggerated verse form with pairs of lines that rhyme, but are of dissimilar length and irregular meter.
