Tough week for Jim Zumbo

Following a blog posting that referred to assault rifles as "terrorist rifles," famed outdoorsman Jim Zumbo watched his media opportunities evaporate after an NRA-fueled backlash.

News on the situation can been found here: view link

Here is a quote from the now-removed post, as reported by the Washington Post:

"Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. As hunters, we don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them. . . . I'll go so far as to call them 'terrorist' rifles."

How do you feel about the issue? Should assault rifles be legal? Did Zumbo get a fair shake?

All weapons should be legal! It is not the weapon it is the person behind it.

Civilians should be able to use and own any weapon that the military uses. Every weapon has a purpose, targeting, hunting or just owning.

I am a former NRA member .I also have some problems with Assault Rifles as "Sporting Weapons". The NRA tends to go overboard on this issue.
Mr. Zumbo is entitled to his oppinion as a Sportsman Hunter. The backlash from the NRA is their typical Knee Jerk reaction to any law that has anything with bans of any kind. Common sense or not. His remark is kind of extreme but it has some merit. These weapons are designed as weapons of war.
Some control should be exercised .However it is locking the barn after the horse is gone they are out there already.

define "assault weapon" could be an assualt knife, or club, or fork, spoon, pencil or anything. i think we should outlaw assault people, the gun is just a tool, can be used for good or bad, depends on the person using it. just my thoughts.....ken

let`s cut zumbo some slack here. read what he said. "the HUNTING FRATERNITY" has no need for these weapons. how many of you hunt deer with an ak-47? in my opinion the NRA forgets that the majority of it`s membership does not own assault type weapons. in thier fanatical no compromise position they do a disservice to the bulk of thier dues paying members by creating negative opinion in the uninformed non shooting public.
for that segment of the NRA who are law abiding & non criminal & want to own & shoot such weapons i support thier right to do so, if properly regulated. however, why tie together a 20 gauge remington 870 quail gun & an M16? they are different weapons with different purposes. zumbo simply speaks for the group he writes for, upland & big game hunters, & very few of those are planning to committ terroist acts. maybe the NRA should abide by an old country expression: Dance with the folks what brung you!

If giving the chance I would prolly like to hunt with an AK47, not on auto.
The person behind it is the one who is supposed to be responsible for the handling of the piece.
Shouldn't make any difference what a person owns. From a knife to a fullly outfited tank, the only reason a government doesn't want its citizens to own the same as they have is to rule them.
Use the appropraite weapon for the job at hand!

"use the appropriate weapon for the job at hand".. now since an assualt rifle is primarily designed to kill people in close contant fighting how many of us, other than the police and the military, have a job where we need to use that weapon? we gun owners are losing ground to anti-gun forces every year, and we need to show reason and some compromise and try not to be percieved as wild eyed fanatics by the anti`s, but as responsible sportsmen who use an entirely different type of tool. one that perhaps they won`t find as objectable. if we don`t we could lose the right to own even sporting arms.

I feel he was totally out of bounds on his comment. I hunt whitetail with a SKS and its one of the best rifles Ive had that were previous military. I had an AK47 and would not of hesitated to use it hunting deer. I am disabled and cannot afford a $500.00 or more hunting rifle so I go with military surplus as they are cheaper the only hard part is finding one that is accurate. The SKS I have now was an armory surplus and never used so essentially I got a new one and it is spot on concerning accuracy! Jimi

I am in the process of buying a gun and enrolling in a pistol training class. More and more I hear in the news about home invasions and about the residents being killed by the bad guys.
As far as a weapon, no weapon should be outlawed if owned and used by a responsible law-abiding citizen. The problem is not the weapon but the person behind the weapon. When was the last time you heard of a member of our armed forces killing innocent civilians in this country with an automatic military weapon or a police officer doing the same? It may be convenient for law enforcement to ban assault weapons. If assault weapons are banned then law enforcement should not be allowed to have assault weapons either. While we're at it why not ban assault weapons used by our military?

I think that any law abiding citizen should be able to own whatever weapon he or she chooses, be it an "assault" rifle or a single shot 410. The person holding the weapon has ultimate control and responsibility for their actions. I choose to carry whenever feasible. I also prefer long guns but do own 3 acp's. The 2nd amendment gives me that right and I wll fight for that right... forever

the name of group is "Shooting and Hunting". i was expecting some interesting exchanges on skeet shooting and upland hunting when i joined. all it has turned out to be is a soap box for NRA type extremist. the only member to mention HUNTING has been shotgunpointer. i really hope some off you don`t actually believe some of the over the top statements you have made, even though i fully support your freedom and right to do so. i would say that if the anti-gun forces are reading them , they are rubbing their hands with glee. they can take such statements to the legislators of their states to show the need for banning ALL guns because of the mentality of the people who own them instead of just the ones primariarly used by thieves, dope dealers, and killers. before you get your collective panties in a wad, i DID NOT say i don`t believe that honest law abiding citizens shoud be deprived of owning and/or using them. but i think they should be licenced and regulated. there needs to be some safeguards to keep them out of the hands of the criminal element. if you are honest and law abiding you should have no problem meeting the necessary requirements to purchase one so why be defensive? me? i think assualt weapons should be left to those they were designed for. i`m happy with 16 ga. shotguns.
i know this is really going to jerk some of your chains, but like you, i have a right to my opinion.
