How to research funds on Morningstar:
Let's assume you are interested in finding out about VFINX - Vanguard's S&P 500 index fund.
1. Go to www.morningstar.com
2. Right under the big red 'Morningstar' where it says 'Quotes', enter the ticker of the fund (VFINX) and click on the forward arrow.
3. Here you can see a snapshot of the fund, including some returns (past 4 years and YTD), the expense ratio and sales commission/load (if there is one), minimum investment, etc.
There are also premium features that you have to pay for. Premium membership is about $125 annually. IMO, it's well worth the cost.
4. You can look closer at returns (up to 10 years if available) if you look on the left margin and click on 'Total Returns'.
You can also look at Tax Analysis, Risk Measures, Portfolio, Management, Fees and Expenses (including what the expense ratio will cost you over 3, 5 and 10 years and a breakout of the expense ratio).
Under snapshot, you can also find News stories and Morningstar alerts about the fund.
(Try comparing two funds. Compare:
RiverSource Small Cap Growth AXSCX
with
Vanguard Small Cap Growth Index VISGX.
Which fund charges a sales commission? Which fund has a higher expense ratio? How do the 5 year returns compare?)
This is just a taste to hopefully get you familiar with using Morningstar for research.
Morningstar also has a good Workshop and Learning Center:
