List Of 75 Banned Or Restricted Breeds

List Of 75 Banned Or Restricted Breeds - Is Your Dog On The List?

The Responsible Dog Owners Of The Western States (RDOWS) has just updated the list of breeds that have been banned or restricted in the U.S.
May 22, 2007 - view link

All you dog lovers out there may just be in for a shock. BSL - or breed-specific legislation and breed discrimination- isn't just for pitbulls or Rottweilers anymore.
The RDOWS has tracked a list of 75 breeds of dogs that have been banned or restricted - yep - that's Seventy-five. That's 75!

Just who or what is behind this breed ban frenzy?

Is your dog on the list of banned or restricted breeds?
Here's the deal...............

Media Frenzy Equals Breed Bans
And just who is pouring gasoline onto the fire, whipping up the flames of pit bull hysteria? Who or what is driving the onslaught of anti-dog legislation?
Your local paper, TV or radio station is - by publishing, posting or airing inaccurate reports than use inflammatory language ("vicious" Rottweiler, "marauding" pitbulls, etc.)
And by deliberately showing UNRELATED footage of dogfights supplied by the Humane Society of the United States.
Dog fighting is a felony in all 50 states and is a totally separate issue from dog-on-human aggression. Yet - we have the HSUS deliberately mixing visual imagery and video of underground dogfights with the issue of dangerous dogs or dog bite prevention AND providing this footage to your local TV station, Nancy Grace, etc. The question you all need to ask is WHY????

Across the country - and indeed around the world - cities, counties and local town councils are busy banning or restricting breeds instead of punishing irresponsible behavior.

Here's what is happening:
a.. Breed bans - an outright ban on owning a specific breed of dog
b.. Breed-specific sterilization - owners are forced to spay or neuter animal
c.. Breed-specific measures that include mandatory registration in a database similar to a sex offender database, forced microchipping, forced containment or signage
d.. Breed-specific insurance requirements - forces owners to obtain the unobtainable "vicious" breed insurance - in reality this forces owners to surrender dogs or move
e.. Weight or size restrictions - banning dogs over an arbitrarily determined weight or size - as in Fairfield, Iowa where all dogs over 100 lbs are banned (St. Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane, etc.)
BTW - your insurance company is happily waiting in the background too - waiting to exclude coverage of your dog, waiting to drop your policy, or waiting to outrageously raise your rates.

List of 75 Banned or Restricted Dogs
This list of dogs that are NOT UNIFORMLY banned/restricted across the U.S. Individual states, cities, counties or towns all make LOCAL LAWS - and those laws differ according to individual communities.
So - without further ado, courtesy of the RDOWS, here is the list of 75 - count 'em - SEVENTY FIVE - banned or restricted breeds .....................

I also am outraged about dog fighting and misconceptions about dog breeds.

I have the sweetest Rottweiler (the vet assistants and groomers tell me all the time). She is so loving and will go up to strangers just to be petted or have her stomach rubbed.

My other dog was a stray that we think they were trying to make into a fighting dog and then threw away. They were either done using him or he didn't work out as a fighter. We've had him for 8 years and he still doesn't like to be touched by anyone and still has other issues. My dogs love each other. The abused dog loves us very much but it took a year to get to a trusting relationship.

What next, no dogs anywhere?
How about getting rid of the dog abusers instead.

Dogs (and people) are what we make of them. People who do not train or care for their dog(s) properly create animals that do not know how to interact with people, other dogs, or the world generally. Any breed, just as any person, is capable of violence and anti-social behavior if given the situation and guidance or lack of, necessary to behave badly. The breed is never the cause of the behavior (I would have thought citizens of the United States would understand this by now but I fear we will always be saddled by bigotry and ignorance). Mismanagement of behavior and experience is the root cause of violence and anti-social behavior.

Hi There,

I'm new to this group, but need to weigh in on this posting. I live in North Carolina and volunteer for the local animal shelter for 17 years now, having served on animal control advisory board, etc. What I am seeing coming into this shelter is a huge number of pits with scars, starvation, burns and other problems. I am also seeing indiscriminate breeding of this beautiful dog, which leads to aggression problems, health problems, etc. This animal has become the macho "status symbol" for groups of Americans, both men and women. I am hoping to see this change, but as long as we live in a society that is unwilling to enforce stricter punishment for abusers, I don't think this is going to happen. While I don't think breed restriction is the way to go, perhaps this is an attempt to get control of this problem. The persons that mistreat these animals should be getting the rap. With this being said, I personally have seen just several pits in my area that I would feel comfortable approaching, because of the way they are bred and raised. I know personally that all dogs can be "dangerous" given the right situation. I have been bitten by an American Eskimo and my own Malamute. Both of these dogs came from puppy mills, where dogs are definitely not bred for temperment. I also know that as far as dog -to -human aggression is concerned, I will take my chances with a smaller dog. Pits have become synamous with dog fighting, which is huge business in this country and we should all be working to get the laws changed. This is the real outrage. The injustice here is not breed restriction, but allowing our society to mistreat animals and turn them into aggressive, dangerous animals. This can be said of ALL breeds. Please join me in contacting your state representatives and let it be known that you will not tolerate cruelty to animals, no matter what the breed.

Sounds pretty rediculous. I have worked with most of these breeds and have personally known many. Can't say I've ever bitten by any of them.

I wonder if the restrictions to size might be because if stupid owners trying to keep large herding or guarding breeds in the city. They could be noisy if the owner does not keep the dog exercized and interested. A large dog in a postage stamp sized yard could is a bad idea, especially for the dog.

Unfortunately when a few mess up, the masses pay the price. I don't believe blanket restrictions are the answer, either.

Some of the breeds on the list just are stunning! Fox Terrier, Boston Terrier? What are they going to do, bite your ankle? Many of these breeds are used as therapy and service dogs because of their gentile temperment and intelligence.

Some of these breeds are absolutely adorable! we all better watch out... Next ones on the list will be my Bichon and Jack Russell...They are both beasts...NOT!

My poor Tango is doubly banned. He is a Belgian/Shepard mix. When we adopted him we weren't sure what to expect. He was a street dog and a little on the wild side. Four years later after a lot of lovin', positve attention and a happy home what do you have? The most loyal, coolest, smartest dog in the world of course.
Ahem,..He's still a killah. Tango the Terminator!

Why is everyone so surprised? This is one more example of using government to usurp individual rights and and to trump individual responsibility. Once again I say my generation, the peace/love and Mao's little red book generation, the spoiled generation is allowing the greatest nation on earth to be destroyed from the inside with PC and socialist ideals one little piece at a time.
