birds and windows

I have had too many birds sail into my sliding glass door or dining room windows. Any ideas how to keep them from doing this? Thanks in advance, Karen

Birds are fooled by clean windows which reflect the sky, and fly into them. Many nature related stores (Wild Birds Unlimited, and others) sell decals of flying hawk profiles. I have 2 in the upper corners of my glass doors and they seem to work; birds will not fly toward a predator they can see. A friend of mine keeps his windows dirty; birds don't see the sky reflection in them and are not attracted. As a final resort our local park district placed netting on the outside of the window and the birds bounced back and did not hurt themselves when/if they hit the window. Hope this helps.

This can be a tough challenge! Here's a great online article on the subject called "Top 10 Things You Can Do to Prevent Window Strikes":

Type "bird window strikes" into cRanky or another search engine and you'll get some good info. Hope that's helpful!

I put up bamboo shades on the windows by the feeders. They never hit the bottom only the top and since putting up the shade have had no calamity. In the front windows I used non-reflective tinting. I can see out but the birds cannot see anything but black. Also streaking the windows with ivory soap works but does not look too good.
