the new iPods

Hi, everyone.....

Can anyone give me some first-hand feedback on how the iTouch is and how it might compare to the new iPod 80gb Classic? Does the iTouch have a volume "slider"?

I have a frind who's son will be 15 in a couple of weeks. He already has a 4gb 2 year old Nano, and it's full, thanks mainly to his father's extensive "Christian Rock" collection.

We're in the $250-$300 range....

The iTouch (at 8gb) has twice the capacity of his Nano, and he doesn't really download videos all that much. And there's the cool factor of the browser, as long as he can find a hot-spot to hook a ride on, which in all likelihood be in his own home, so what's the point of the iTouch, y'know? He already *has* a desktop computer for that.

The new 80gb Classic, though, is something that he'll never (ok, never say never) fill up.

Would anyone know how much gb an HD movie would take up when downloaded? Would it be about, say 12gb per hour of playing time?

Thanks!

I know we have some iPhone users out there, but the iTouch kind of sneaked up on us. Not sure anyone has their hands on one yet. Me, I don't even have an iPod (yet), but the technology is looking more tempting.

Just last week, I arrived at a local coffee cavern to meet some guys. A number of folks had laptops hooked into the free WiFi. I was thinking, This is the place I need an iPhone or iTouch: scan the web, check my office e-mail, etc. while I wait. Hmmm....

Hope we hear some hands-on reviews, soon. Inquiring minds want to know.

Pressley -

I have an iPod Mini, and I have it loaded with music and it's connected to a little dock that can be remotely controlled with the Apple remote. I have it as a small music server to my stereo (yeah, I still LOVE those good old 2-channel songs!) and it works just fine. Granted, the purists would say that the music is compressed and doesn't have the dynamic range of an oversampled file, but, hey, you can't beat the convenience.

The user interface is identical to the iPhone, just no phone portion so it will be very nice to use. The Classic will still have the click wheel, no changes other than a larger hard drive.

I don't think an HD movie will be 12 Gb, probably more like 6 based on the size of standard braodcast movies I have downloaded from Tivo. But I don't know if there are even any HD movies available for download yet.

Did anyone else get one of these? I've had one for a couple of months now. It's nice to have when my daughter's here and always on my computer. It's a much nicer interface than my Blackberry has for surfing the web, etc. But you need to be somewhere with wi-fi to use it, so while it works great at home and at some restaurants, airports, etc. I can't use it on the bus or a lot of other places I'm able to use my Blackberry. Also, the toulch interface is definitely not designed for women with long fingernails. And I wish it had a camera. But it is cool and fun to use.

One advantage of classic iPod is that it can be used as a hard drive. It actually mounts on the desktop and you can use it like any external drive. When I travel I take any files I need as well as presentations on my iPod 80 GB. If something happens to my computer, I can plug in the iPod and get my files. If you can get the iPod initialized on a PC it works in both worlds.

The iPod touch is exactly like an iPhone without the phone function or the data roaming from AT&T. Otherwise its the same.

AND NO CAMERA. I had heard that the iTouch was exactly the same as an iPhone except for the phone, so I was disappointed after I got mine to discover that it also doesn't have a camera. Just don't want anyone else to make that mistake about it.

What I wish they had was a video camera on the screen side, like the MacBooks. That would make for a totally kewl video chat device. I could see using that in the business world to facilitate meetings without the time, expense and waste of precious energy resources. Of course, everybody would want to work from the coffee house.
