Pottery - Art or Craft?

I think one problem lies with the definition of the word "ceramics." Many times when I tell folks I am a ceramist or work in the ceramic field, they immediately jump to the conclusion that I pour and paint those cute 'ceramic' molds. as recent as 1992!! Sheesh! Our local tv station advertised a one hour special on the "how tos" of pottery - they had a gal on for a whole hour that did nothing but make animals and stuff out of MOLDS and she went on to explain the most important part was smoothing out the lines, so that it looked like a real sculpture. I found it insulting and wrote the station - response was - what people could do at home):
