Starting over

Hi, I was born in New Orleans and worked in New Orleans all my life. My home, my parent's, brother's and sister's homes were all destroyed by Katrina. We all lived near each other in Chalmette. We all moved on with our lives -- either relocating or rebuilding. We all are/were tax-paying working Americans. Sometimes people think badly about Chalmette people. We had all classes of people like everywhere else. We all had different ways of coping with the aftermath of the storm. Katrina has changed all our lives. It has been difficult on all of us. I hope to share my experiences and read about other survivors' experiences. It helps to share.

It's nice to hear your voice. I live far away from you, have seen the disaster on TV and in newspapers and magazines, so it's good to hear from those who were and are there.

I admit to a bad opinion for the Chalmette people before the storm. Late 2006 and early 2007 I was doing the Broker Price Opinions for Road2LA. I was given many to do in St. Bernard so I started specializing in that area. I had the talk radio host announce that I was having a hard time doing this work because of the absence of street signs. Within a week there were handmade signs put up with roofing nails. Thank you all for that.
I saw people putting their homes and businesses together while other areas waited for the city or government to do something. St. Bernard pulled up her bootstraps and went to work. Walgreens and Winn Dixie were the first big chains to open in all of the East. I finally did not have to go to Metairie and Slidell to go to a store. We finally have a Winn Dixe and Walgreens in the East however I still to to Chalmette to spend my money regularly. Ya can't put em down.... Y'all go with your bad self.

I have had the Fortune, Misfortune of meeting folks from all over St Bernard up close and personal after the storm. Fortunate for me that they left their beloved parish and moved to slidell, unfortunate for them as they lost everything.
Hard working, family loving people..... works for me
