Any advice???

So, has anyone been watching the debates. If you have you'll have noticed a silence when it comes to ageism or boomers in general. If a national health insurance policy is discussed at all it's done at breakneck speed and off to other topics. For many I guess it's 'I'll worry about when I get there', but the reality is if you're lucky, you get there!

We are one of if not the fastest growing segment of our society. Either through retirement or getting caught up in housecleaning of 50 plussers the numbers grow daily. And as for housecleaning it's called realignment strategies for improved productivity.

Whether you've been smart and industrious or just struggled to get by most will wind up with a finite amount to survive on. Unless of course you're the one that won the 300 plus million Powerball a couple of week ago. Then this is probably a bore.

I understand that we face significant problems as a nation. War, our youth is dying because of it. No stop gaps on energy costs, congress convenes hearings and sternly admonish Oil exes that smugly raise prices the next day. Pop up mortgage houses lending ARMs to people who will never be able to pay them back if one hiccup happens in their life. And right now all those notes are getting to 5 years and it's not completely here, it's just starting to hit the fan. Now there is a jump in unemployment and a drop in new jobs so everyone is talking recession on the money channels.
So, we are part of that, it concerns us, but what doesn't seem to concern them is US. 50 and above.

My whole discussion here is that we have around 14 months until we hire the next crew for the "Inside the beltway" jobs for the next 4 years. So, I pose this question, what do we do to get our voice heard and let them understand that they need our support and vote. I know we can write individual letters to party offices and congresspersons but how do we get heard as a group that will be heard. We are a disparate herd with different affiliations, interest and beliefs. In my sense it's not important who you cast your vote for as long as they have worked for it and will work for you. I know there has to be people in our family of a thousand that have organization, outreach and communications skills that may be able to give us ideas. Like I said,14 months.

There is a lot of power in the voice of many. This particular group on Eons, carries a big voice. With almost 1000 members, and a pretty active readership, we are one of the largest groups and these voices ARE getting attention.

Right now, candidates are focused on raising money, not of really dealing with the issues of the decade ahead. (FYI, there is a section on Eons that highlights policy for each candidate.) I will tell you that I've sent in requests for interviews to both Clinton and Hilary and received nothing but more solicitations for my dollars, so I have to agree...it can be challenging to be heard.

You have a great voice -- perhaps you should consider starting a group here on eons dedicated to following the specific positions of each candidate. In 14 months you will have a good amount of time to build up interest and a following.

Of course, I realize that building a voice takes a lot of energy and time. I've been working on Gen Plus (the blog, the eons group and my job board at genplususa.com) for several years -- every day, every night, reading, researching, writing and authentically sharing my viewpoint. Yes, it is a lot of work, but I believe in the power of the written word to create change, so I continue along this particular path.

I guess the real question is, who will speak, really speak, for our demographic and who is listening? I like your voice. You are an active participant in the group and perhaps by continuing to contribute, doing your best to get people out to vote (that is the biggest hurdle), and by speaking your mind, you do have impact.

The web is a big, yet very small place and our words do get read. By many, many people.

I hope other group members will keep this conversation going. It's a good one.

Well, Wendy I've always considered you as one of our champions to use an old TQM phrase. And yes, I guess I wrote it because I want to more than just vetch about our plight. But I'm just a learner at this stage. That's why I posed the question to those I know are out there with real experience. Thanks for site, it's a great platform.

Good article, playsnmud, so true, so true. Good for you. Here comes a boom.

Yes, how do we get heard? I've written to my senators and congressperson on several issues but I always get back their opinions, not the opinions of the many who voted them in. I don't know where to go anymore. AARP doesn't seem to be concerned about age discrimination and finding the over 50 crowd jobs.

I do not have the knowledge or skills to lead something, but am ready, willing, and able to help. Maybe Eons is the place to get things moving forward. How do we form a group and be heard in Washington. As playsnmud stated, we only have 14 months. Let's organize and be heard.

Since this may not be the best site for continued dialoge I've repeated the message over on "Political Discussions" groups in the "Other" folder. This is a great place to seek out competent and skilled people but the topic is more closely related to the other group. So, we will see the response we get there.

If y'all find anyone to listen, please let me know and I will be glad to add my 2 cents - and that's about what I am down to after being downsized from my state's largest lawfirm after 14 years and 43 years experience. I earned my professional legal secretary certification and my professional paralegal certification. I was president of my local legal professional association and reelected for the next year. However, I was called to HR on July 6, 2006, 3 weeks after my 63rd birthday, and given the axe. Of course, the firm is building a new multi-million dollar building. They gave me the excuse that the firm just didn't have enough business to justify keeping me on. I have a friend in Detroit, Michigan who got this same crap last week and they told her she was going to go on layoff status as of that day. Then they told her she could try working the 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. shift to see how that worked for a while. We have survivors of Hurricane Katrina flooding our workforce and I have been unable to find another job now in over a year. This is the first time in my life I have not been able to find a job. Employers are hiring people with no experience as cheaply as possible and have no feelings or regard for people who have loyally worked for them for many years. As Americans live longer, it looks like we can look forward to years of being abruptly forced into poverty.

Hi -- I take back what I said, Playsnmud...head to my eons blog for my reaction! view link I think this is exactly the right place for the type of conversation your post is creating. In fact, I'd like to see what comes out of this particular topic. If this group can get some rip-roaring dialogue going on regarding the needs of the 50 plus worker, I'm all for it.

Excellent blog. I thnk you reach a huge audience and with this group as well, maybe it will generate some participation. I'm content to accept that the other place I tried to land to generate support is just not the right format for it and will leave it at that. It sounded like everyone was angry so I tried to change places and though I couldn't really, I did see where I was getting my angst from by looking back at myself. I guess it's relative, what I see in the mid-west directly affects me. In the past decade I've seen state and local government amass a surplus budget and then go into the red. This all happened with a yearly collection of major auto and manufacturing businesses closing plants and sending 10's of thousand of workers on their way. Those with lots of union years will have reasonable buyout packages and the younger ones will eventually find some employment. But I also see a domino effect where smaller businesses and sub contractors that don't offer the same benefits are re-locating or just closing the doors. Beyond that is the Mom and Pops and local eateries that survived on the business from the workforce that no longer exists. And I'm sure others are affected that I'm not aware of. This all impacts the infrastructure of cities and towns which eventually comes back to the people who have already have lost jobs but still have to pay for government that now has to pay for services from a smaller tax base. Ergo, increase taxes. And besides that, unless you can get position that pays the same as before the playing field becomes a little more flat. Skilled labor and professionals and new grads are competing for the same piece of pie. To verify this is a reality I remember NY Times articles about results of a big reccession last century that resulted in the huge layoff by Boeing in Seattle that focused on Areospace engineers with advanced degrees, driving cabs and doing night security. The market took several years to recover so I susupect careers were damaged as a result. I see the same pattern developing here. And boomers are not a priority when it comes to fixing these problems. I'm not trying to sound the Chicken Little alarm because there is alot of economic growth here but the dynamics have changed. Heavy industry is slowing and specialized focused skills are becoming the norm. This is great for our youth but if your caught in the limbo of 5 to 10 years before retirement choices get limited. So, that's why I think we need a voice in the coming elections.

I just read your post and want to share that you can directly connect with the candidates on Eons. Each one other than Fred Thompson has an actual profile on the site... You are then just one click away from interacting with the candidates of your choice.

Thanks for the information. I hope all will take advantage of it. This will be a great forum to see if they do have our interests as part of their platform.
